I mean kind of yes. Your collecting strategy revolves around trying to ID cards that are undervalued, of players you like. Purchase price versus current value seems to be of great concern to you for the cards in your collection.

Not saying any of this is really bad, it just is what it is. Compare that to someone like TBP, who doesn't care one bit about finding "good deals", he has cards on his want list that come up maybe once per year (maybe even less), and will pull the trigger if the price is reasonable. Does he hope to pay as little as possible? Yes of course. But that takes a back seat to simply landing the card.

I hear what you are saying. I guess when I hear investor, I think of many people on here that buy cards for the purpose of selling at a higher price to make money.

When I first started posting on this Ohtani thread, I mainly was buying 2018 base RC and inserts at the lowest prices I could find. I tried to buy as many different cards as possible, because I like collecting a large amount of cards.

Everyone else on here told me that is a terrible strategy and that base cards are garbage due to high print runs. That is when I started targeting cards that had lower print runs that cost more money to collect. Unlike TBT I like collecting more than just flagship black cards (which I own zero of). I like to buy cards I like. In fact I love the topps and bowman high tek. I have a ton of these cards even though most "collectors" won't touch them with a 10 foot pole because they are an oddball set.

The bottom line is I don't have a lot of collecting experience of modern cards (since I started collecting during covid) and only really follow a few baseball players (I don't collect any other sports).

In retrospect I wish I had take Trueblue's advice and only bought high end Ohtani RC. But I am not comfortable spending thousands of dollars on one card. At the time it seemed super risky for spending my fun hobby money on.

So yes now I do try to buy Ohtani cards that are under valued, but I don't buy cards I don't like and I do buy a lot of cards others on here think are bad investments.

Something I've found interesting since buying Ohtani starting in 2023 is the lack of bump the 2017 Bowman Chrome Mega has gotten over time. I've always checked in on the card periodically. In a PSA 10 it has increased, but it's pretty much like only 2x or less, given how much his rookie cards and such have grown.

Personally, I don't feel the need to have the card and I imagine collectors feel the same way, which is why it hasn't grown in the same way as other 2018 cards. But, I am open to hearing any other reason. I feel like it's a card I should eventually own, but whenever I look at the price, I feel like I am not missing out and can always buy it later.

Great card to have in your collection. Looks especially nice with all the other 2018 papers.

Cool right on! (on the bolded). If you like your cards and you like collecting a large amount of cards, why do you say you wish you had only bought high end? You'd have way fewer cards.

The 2017 Bowman Mega (purple) was one of the first Shohei singles I ever bought specifically because I felt like I had to own it. It's his first card bearing the Bowman brand. It's his first pack-issued card from Topps. It's his first true American card and it's a card I will likely never part with. I have no opinion as to whether or not it's undervalued, but I'm happy I got mine when I did for whatever I paid for it.

Awesome card, congrats. It's a great card.

I understand the importance of the card and I think a lot of people do as well. Given that people are going towards the Japanese, pre-MLB cards, I find it crazy that people aren't crazy about the official first bowman of Ohtani.

Disclaimer: I do not own a 2017 Bowman Ohtani

Because now I will never own those cards due to price increase. If I had bought them years ago I could have had them and all my low and medium end cards.

I think this card is really underated and under valued. To me the market/collectors are irrational. This should be the "it" card as it'd his Bowman 1st. Instead collectors are choosing 2018 Bowman chrome as the "it" card.

Is it possible the casual collector is unaware of this card?

There's nothing preventing you from owning high end cards if you sell multiple cards and consolidate. I buy cards that I shouldn't be able to "afford" all the time. You'd have to be ultra rich to buy high end without selling anything.

My collection has also decreased in number drastically and I couldn't be happier. Many cards I bought were purchased with intent to grade and sell to fund bigger cards. I had 150+ copies of US1 10s at one point and 100+ copies of #700 10s from foilboard hunting. That model no longer works due to grading, but there are many, many, affordable ways to build up to big cards if you are willing to take 2-4 steps to get there.

I don't think that's true though. If you spent $1000 on a high end card in 2020, that'd be $1000 worth of low end cards you never purchased. Your collection would look very different.

And like TrueBlue said, you can still sell off cards to fund a higher end card. You always could do that, and always will be able to do that. Sell $10k worth and get you a nice rookie auto.

I can’t even begin to imagine what legendary is to you!

Everytime you say something like this, my jaw drops at what you come up with. I can’t even imagine what you have coming, but can’t wait!

All this and my Ohtani is garbage compared to yours.

So excited to see it!

There's no such thing as a garbage Ohtani. High end cards don't make other cards irrelevant

All the shiny cards I post are a product of scrapping behind the scenes. Anyone can do it with a little bit of luck and strange discomfort!
