paypal payment please help

Hey guys, I just ended the auction for the Joba auto ref and the guy actually lives in denver and wants to come pick up the card from me after he makes the payment via paypal and gets it authorized. My question is should i have some contract for him to fill out or should I just make him pay for the shipping cost? Any advise will help as I have never sold and item this expensive. Thanks

Personally I would not let him pick it up especially if he is paying via Paypal as then you will have no way to prove you delivered it. I would advise shipping it with signature confirmation just to cover yourself otherwise whats to stop him from doing a chargeback? The only way I would allow a pick up is if he is paying you cash or money order.

You have a couple of options... Send him a payment request as a cash advance. Let him pickup the card, but then mail him the receipt with DC.

If he wants to come pick it up, have him send paypal, then show up with cash. When he give you the cash, issue a refund. That or have him come and get it with cash.

Wolffer - what's your feedback and what's his feedback? I've had a lot of people request to meet me over the years (couple hundred at least) to pick up a card or cards, but I always decline. It is almost always somebody with low feedback. Shoot, it's not like saving the postage won't be offset by a gallon or so of gas! I do know that some people are paranoid about whether or not they would ever get the card and about the USPS, but that is what feedback is for...

Do you have a store he wants to pick it up at? I would NEVER let somebody come to my house. If I ever decided to meet somebody because it was a VERY high $ card (at least a couple thousand) and part of the negotiations, I'd meet them somewhere "off-site". They just have no business seeing my house - and maybe I'm a bit paranoid, but with 3 small boys I'd rather lean that way.

Just my opinion...

I believe that there are several issues here. I think the buyer is also worried about the card getting damaged during shipping as well as never getting to him. $3500 is a lot for a card, but it's not like it's $10K or more. If he wants to meet, how far away is he? Will he be flying in to an airport near you? That would be a good, neutral place to meet, but there are many others. I would require that he pays you in cash if he wants to meet in person. $3500 in cash is not that much to carry around these days.

Let us know what you decide and how it turns out. I'm sure it will help other members of this board out in the future.

A few years back I purchased some original comic book art. To save money for S&H AND as mentioned, to avoid running the risk of the item getting damaged in transit or lost I coordinated a pickup at a McDonalds half way for the both of us. I believe I paid for it via Paypal way ahead of time and we had been talking back and forth quite a bit before the pickup date. Things went smooth and we both drove away happy. Maybe just for your personal records take a photo of the purchaser w/ the card? Bring a friend and have them take a photo of the 2 of you exchanging it? Hate to see the person pay via Paypal and then do a chargeback because you have no record of ever having sent the item and him never having a record of "receiving" it. Cash seems like a good idea, or even a cashier's check sent to your address that has already posted to your bank account. Good luck.

Remember if you do let him pay via Paypal then you need to follow Paypal's rules to cover yourself. They only accept an online form of proof of delivery so a contract or photo or anyhting you do in person will not be accepted.

Well guys I had the payment this am when I woke up. He gave him his number and come to my apartment to pick up the card. I had a witness to the transaction and had him sign a contract. He is going to get the card graded at the show in san fran next weekend and is going to keep me posted on the grade he gets. The entire experience went well and I would recommend it to anybody selling an expensive item. Just write up a contract and get their ID to make sure that is the person. Hope this helps.

Congrats on both the sale and the smooth transaction. I hope the card grades well. It should help future sales if you let your buyers know that you sold a high end, ungraded card that ended up grading high.
