Default Leaving the hobby

I've come to the realization that no matter how many cards I obtain, I'm never satisfied. It's a total money pit. Don't get me wrong, it's fun, but there's never an end and I realized my money can be used for better things.

I thought it would be tough, but it actually feels quite liberating to sell off my collection. Beautiful cards, but I found the fun was in the hunt. Once I held the cards, the interest quickly faded.

Good luck to everyone!

GO HAWKS!

Yes, you are right! The fun is in the hunt. I am on a card timeout, but I am never retiring from the hobby. If I made twice the money, I would go harder. I don't, so I have to come back to my senses. Well, 51 or so autos in less than two years is not bad in my mind.

Amen. Just take a break. Sell a couple if you need the money now. But don't sell them all!

I noticed you're from BC. It's always good to see another, I'm from Abby. Don't do something you might regret. Take a break and see how it goes. If you feel you're ready with no regrets then unload it all. In the meantime you can piece of smaller stuff you know you won't want, but give some time for the bigger things.

Living inColorado, i see the prices people spend on skiing and snowboarding. Several hundred just for a season pass. You need new equipment, then you need cash for gas to the resorts, cash for food and lodging etc. I dont feel so bad when I buy a few cards on Ebay or may be some boxes here and there.

Yeah, if you are spending more than you can afford, you might have a problem. What Ive noticed is guys need EVERY card or buy every box that gets releases.

Actually, I did this a couple years ago and haven't regretted it. Finding and getting cards was much more fun for me than holding onto them. I guess it's a question of do you get your fix from the hunting/buying or the hoarding

With the expense and tax implications of constant flipping, it became a giant money pit for me as well.

Good luck, OP.

I'm about to have my first kid so there's no way I can keep dropping hundreds on cards. For me it's feast or famine.. If I was single I'd probably keep doing it but no point now. If I can't scoop sick cards, no point in continuing. I'm not into base cards.

Having sold most of my stuff already I feel great. Probably buy a wilson framed and auto'd jersey and call it a day.

Cards can be an addiction. Cards cost a lot of money. If you aren't the kind of person that can do it in moderation then you definitely need to step away.

I have an addictive personality. I've been addicted to sports cards, women, and MMORPGS. If you are "feast or famine" as you say, then it is probably best that you leave it all behind.

When you finally decide to leave the addiction behind it is so freeing!

I'm back into to cards now, but I've learned to only dabble. I spent about $600 on cards this year as opposed to $10,000 last year.

I have a lot of people holding me accountable now too. So, if I slip up I will have a check there. The truth is that I love cards, but I can't always make good decisions with my money because of my lack of self-discipline.

If that's you, then you should definitely take an extended break. You'll enjoy the freedom. Maybe you never come back. Maybe you do come back. Whatever you do, be well!

I hear ya man. 2014 will be a break for me. After having my son in 2012 and redoing a budget I was able to stay buying cards. My daughter will be here next month so I plan on 2014 being another lets say team rebuilding year lol
