Default Feedback question

All,

I recently bid on and won 3 auctions from a single person - when he invoiced me he charged me $3 for the first auction and $2 for each additional auction for shipping. I questioned the $$ amount and said that I hoped that for $7.00 that the package would be shipped priority mail. I got the usual response from him that said,

"Please advise it costs me .40 cents to list the card ,1.25 for a padded envelope,1.65 minimum to ship, plus time to wrap and ship. the 3.00 is for shipping and "handling" if you look at everyone else who sells cards on e-bay. 3.00 is on the low end. plus i do combined shipping which most people do not . i think youll see that this is fair and a normal practice on ebay."

He left positive feedback on all 3 transactions already -

The cards show up today in a single bubble mailer, $1.30 postage on it, in toploaders without any sleeves, no DC, no tape over the top of the holders to keep the cards in.....

Do I leave negative or neutral feedback or just whack him on the Ebay "stars" system??

Were these auctions for individual cards? If so, you paid $7 to ship 3 cards? That's certainly not on the 'low' side. I am a fan of using feedback to make other potential buyers and sellers aware of buyer and seller 'issues'. You really can't leave neg feedback because you got your merchandise and I assume they weren't damaged. I also assume that his shipping prices were posted in the auction and were not a surprise. Given those assumptions, neutral feedback and nail him on the stars, IMO.

I don't think people really care about the new stars system. The only thing they might ever see about the transaction would be the short verbage Ebay allows, or the neutral/negative that would show up for the next few months. $7 is a lot for 3 cards, w/o DC, no Insurance and poor packaging. I'd go neutral and ding him on stars w/ an explanation in your verbage. He DID live up to his bargain of shipping (hopefully quickly), he DID spell out his terms for S&H so you knew how much it would be, and hopefully your items were as described in the auction. You can be truthful and people will get the idea about his S&H practices.

If those cards were worthy of grading more than likely they aren't anymore. When the cards were put into the top loaders without penny sleeves there's no doubt that the surface is scratched so there's a potential of a high grade card slipping to a very low grade. You said that there wasn't any tape put across the top of the top loader well at least there's not any glue to ruin the edges. There should be a small piece of paper folded over the top of the top loader then taped. Yes the shipping IMO was too much but if he explained his shipping cost in the auction what can you do. I would leave a NEG. and explain why.

"I paid .40 to list the card" - "time to wrap and ship" - gotta love it ! Doesn't top my seller with the "I pay my assistant to stand in line at the USPO" but its up there. E-mail him and tell him that his shipping is a COMPLETE rip-off and that he should paypal you some money back. If he doesn't work with you I'd leave a 3 neutrals and use all three blurbs to explain why he got them. No soft sleeves in the loaders ARGHHHHH - that is a HUGE pet peeve of mine.

I would think $2 each card is excessive. I get heat for charging $1 for each addt'l card but I pack professionally and 99% of the time the buyer thinks its worth it. I would be extremely ticked off if there was no inner sleeve. That's stone-age level card sales tactics. I think I figured out penny sleeves made sense in top-loaders in 1988, and I was 11 at the time.

I don't understand why people don't use Card Saver IIs. They cost less and weigh less, plus the cards don't shift around.

I don't know the details of your situation, so I will just say that in general, if someone knows what shipping is before they bid, then they have no right to complain, i.e., leave negative or neutral feedback for that reason. I think if you're going to do anything, you should tell PayPal it never arrived. That's morally wrong, too, but at least it will teach the seller a lesson about overcharging on shipping, and remember this is coming from someone who SELLS on eBay. Regardless, he should get crappy star ratings.

Not the point. I should've sold my Sam Horn rookie cards when I could have gotten 50 cents for them on the recess field.

I know it wasn't the point but still had to throw it in. I forgot about Sam Horn

Dobber,

As others pointed out, it's one thing to complain if his shipping price and method was pointed out in the auction before you bid. I don't think you can leave a negative if this is the case.

HOWEVER...in his response to your question, .40, then 1.25, then at least 1.65 for postage and another $3 for "handling" equals 6.30. He's still off/overcharging you 70 cents. Then to find out the actual postage was only 1.30 instead of 1.65, means an additional overcharge of 35 cents. He clearly charged you over $1 more than his explanation. This should be pointed out in an email first. If he does nothing about it, I would leave him a negative.

Here's a quick story...

A few years ago, I was selling individual packs of 1994 SP baseball. One guy paid me $1.25 for insurance. I put that insurance on someone else's package. He sent me a nasty email stating that I charged too much for postage since I didn't even insure this package. I promplty apologized and sent him a refund for the $1.25. He then left me positive feedback stating that I was a great seller and that he received an Alex Rodriguez die cut rookie.

I know this is a little different situation, but if he does not follow through with a refund as per his price breakdown of shipping, I would leave him a negative. Just my 2 cents.

I personally don't agree with leaving a negative if the item is safely received and the shipping amount charged is clearly explained in the auction listing. If the cards arrived as pictured/described, I would contact him about the higher than explained s/h charge and then if he didn't do anything about it, think about leaving a neutral. I would definitely get him with the star ratings for shipping cost regardless though.

Tony,

I can agree with you except for the fact that he clearly stated "at least $1.65 for shipping", but in fact only paid $1.30 for it. That's my biggest problem with this transaction.

Did he state in his auctions that he offered combined shipping and what the discount would be? If not then you have a legitimate beef and 3 negs would be ok. If he stated that each additional card would be $2 then you made a mistake and it shouldn't be held against him.

As for $1.25 for a padded mailer, someone should let him know where to get them cheaper than "RipOff Office Products".

Just my opinion.

All,

I went back and reread the auctions - he did state that any additional items won would be $2 and not the original $3 - that still does not take away the fact that he shipped these like crap without much protection - I will either not leave feedback or leave positive feedback but whack him on the stars....

The part that would bug me, is the "0.40 cents to list...". I know we all try to recoup our expenses via shipping, but technically, it is against ebay's policies. You could forward that e-mail to ebay, and ding him that way.
As far as feedback, I would leave a neutral. You got the cards, but don't feel it was a positive experience. Why leave positive feedback?

I'd have an issue with how the cards were packaged for mailing, but as far as the cost for the combined shipping, if it was stated clearly in the auction then you really can't complain, even though it's definitely excessive.

Since he already left you feedback you don't have to worry about retaliation - I'd leave a neutral and state in the feedback that even though the cards arrived safely, they were not shipped in a secure manner to let future customers know that they're risking receiving damaged cards by ordering from this guy.
