Default Are all high end hobby boxes big on retired players?

I opened my first high end hobby box today, and both signatures were retired guys. Retired guys aren't good for my collecting strategy. Is this a common thing, or did I just get a weird box?

It is not uncommon. I've seen a few cases where half the boxes had the rookies, half the boxes were more Veteran heavy. See any NT case break.

I don't have a scanner, but I have a /25 John Stockton, and a /99 Rex Chapman. It was from an Intrigue.

They're good cards, I just would rather have someone who still plays.

I could take pictures of them if you want. Do people like looking at pictures of good cards here? I have a really good one I'd like to show off.

Honestly from intrigue I would be very happy with a Stockton auto /25. Is it a patch auto too?

Panini LOVES to put retired players in just about everything they release(even in the base sets! ) I usually offer free/just pay shipping on retired players lots on base and inserts when I get them in packs and they get claimed in just a few minutes most of the time so someone is collecting them!

im not sure what your collecting strategy is, but for the price that you can sell that Stockton and chapman you can buy a bunch of low end rookies, or a couple nice ones probably. so...I would rather do that than pull a 5 dollar rookie scrub

and boxes these days I would say are more rookie heavy. The higher end usually tries to spread it out between rookies and vets because people want veteran/legend hits in their products.

So you throw a bunch of retired players in a lot and then a lot of inserts?

Would I throw like 3 equal valued retired guys in a set and sell for the combined value and do the same with like 20 inserts or 20 base set?

I'm interested in getting rid of some of the cards I don't need and buying rookies.

They very often are, because if you want desirable autos and a large checklist, you need a lot of retired players.

I agree, it gets old. It wouldn't be as bad if the Vets were all major stars, but are there really 99 people looking for Rex Chapman?

Vets are a way for Panini to further water down products while seemingly offering more 'hits' It's just that those extra 'hits' are further watered down. Just look at 2013-14 Intrigue Slam Ink:
#1 Vincer Carter /15
#2 Blake Griffin /25
#3 Kobe Bryant /99
#4 Kevin Durant /49
#5 Anthony Davis /25
#6 Terrence Ross /49
#7 Kenneth Faried /25
#8 DeMarcus Cousins /15
...
#36 Kenny Walker /199
#37 Darrell Griffith /199
#38 Dee Brown /199
#39 Julius Erving /25
#40 Larry Nance /199

Do we see a problem?

Some people are really into Vets and it's cool to pull a piece of basketball history every once in awhile, but in sets like these the lower-end Vets are so disproportionately common that it starts becoming difficult to pull active players.
