Default kidney stones

Spent yesterday in the ER with my third and by far worst bout with kidney stones. Thought I was in the clear by last night having felt fine for a couple hours but then it ramped back up overnight. Have actually felt fine since waking up this morning (finally fell asleep at 4am, kiddo woke me up at 6am) but now that I know feeling fine then feeling awful again is in play.....ugh

Anyone got any sweet kidney stone stories to share? This is the worst my friends, theee worst

That sucks man. My brother has some horror stories about them, he is pretty careful with his diet now (whether that does any good I'm not sure).

Yea they suck. I had a relatively small one about a year ago, but still killed. Took about 3 days to pass, after which the pain almost instantly was almost gone, and was only a little sore for a few days.

It'll suck, but will feel so much better after it's gone.

Yeah it's tough without having the actual stone for them to analyze. The most common type is high calcium usually from too much dairy, but I'm fairly lactose intolerant and generally avoid most dairy. It is hereditary and my dad gets them too, I guess really the only thing to do is lots and lots of water, which I've gotten. Better about since the first one but apparently not good enough!

Had kidney stones over a two week period before. Every other day I was passing stones. Doctors said the cause was the water that was being Filtered in Iraq had way to much calcium in it. I was case number 250 something since January and this was only February.

I had a kidney stone once that took forever to pass so I spent many days in a Vicodin stupor to keep the pain away.

My Wife has been told by doctors that she is a stone factory. Shes had 2 operations to blast stones but that doesnt work very well. The nasty thing is when she passes one she puts it in a cup and SAVES THEM...she has a little cup with around 25 in there and they look like nerds candys.

Jeebus is that some kind of mania? I'm guessing you discovered this fun fact after the wedding? That would raise a few alarm bells otherwise, I would think.

My husband had a bad experience when I was about 7 months pregnant with our first. It looked very painful. We had to go to the ER at about 2am. He didn't want any morphine as he is pretty anti any drugs other than minor stuff. I finally talked him into some. I don't think he likes it nearly as much as I do.

You sure it has nothing to do with your gallbladder? Maybe a gallbladder attack?

I have no idea what kidney stones feel like, but I had only one gallbladder attack, it was so bad they just removed it

Ive had them twice. The first time I was like nah I wont need the pain pills...man was I wrong. The doc said I still have one dormant that will eventually need to be laser blasted as its too big to pass but he didnt want to do that at the time due to me only being in my early 20's. I wouldnt wish them on anyone. The worst is when they move and all of a sudden you find yourself leaning against a wall in agony.

Now you don't even need the kidney stones anymore.

I have passed a couple of dozen of them, had one surgically removed, and still have 13 in my kidneys now. Mine are not calcium stones, but oxylate sp? stones.

OP... Maybe your pain has eased off because the stone made it into your bladder. If so, it is all downhill from there. I have never had one hurt while it was actually exiting my body. The pain is all from the kidney to the bladder.

I save mine in a jar too!

Lucky...mine started as a really bad pain in the lower left side of my back, and it moved towards my stomach as it passed. The pain goes away for a bit and then comes back, goes away, comes back. I passed mine without pain killers. I don't think I'll do that next time.

I had kidney stones when I was 16, it was horrible. I have a friend who had gotten it multiple times and says that drinking alot of tea contributed to the development of his stones. He cut them out of his habits and now does not suffer from it anymore. I have been fortunate not to get another stone but I'm anyways worried I'm at risk

I've luckily never had one and am terrified to get one due to the stories i've read on here and through friends that have had them.

I'm 33 and I had my first kidney stone experience last December.

I woke up very early one morning (around 4 AM) and had the most severe pain I've ever felt in my entire life in my lower left side. I had no idea what it was so I went to the emergency room. I knew something wasn't right.

Long story short, I had about a 5 mm stone (the width of the ureter is only about 3 mm in diameter, so passing a stone much larger than that may not happen). I was in the hospital for 3 days and could not pass the stone on my own, so I had to have lithotripsy to get it taken care of. I had a ureteral stent placed inside me and I had it for 18 days. My urine looked like cranberry juice for about a week, then looked like grapefruit juice for another few days. I was prescribed Percocet for the pain, which greatly helped, but the experience wasn't exactly a walk in the park. This went from before Christmas to the day after New Year's, so my holidays were shot last year.

I just had my 8-week follow-up last week. I am doing and feeling much better, but I really, really, really hope I never have to go through that ever again. My urologist told me to limit my intake of tea, colas, chocolate, and peanuts. I also asked him specifically about orange juice, coffee, and beer, since I drink those on a regular basis and he told me those are all fine and should not contribute to the formation of stones.

I've done a lot of research in the last couple of months since I've had my stone experience. In terms of preventing stones, there is a lot of info out there and some of it is similar to much of what has already been stated in this thread:

https://www.kidney.org/atoz/content/...stones_prevent

In terms of developing stones, a lot of it is heredity. Some people are just much more prone to developing kidney stones than others are. To those of us who have had stones, I hope we can do what we need to do in order to prevent future stones for forming. For those of you who have not ever had a kidney stone, pray you never get one...
