Default Jury Duty

I've been sitting on a jury all week & my time ended today. Anyone ever sat on a jury? If so, what kind of crime & guilty or innocent? If guilty, what kind of sentence did the defendant get?

This was my first time(only other time I got called I was in college and ended up exempt) & the whole process was really interesting to go through. It's not something I'd want to do every day but once we actually got past the vetting process and to the trial it was neat watching everything unfold.

I have been on a jury in:

Traffic court - man driving wrong way on freeway and fought it
Civil Court - man sued a bus company for injuries sustained in a 5 mph accident (he lost)
Criminal Court - man murdered his wife and claimed that she accidentally shot herself twice... in the head. He was found guilty.

Ive never done jury duty. I am 22 and would love to do it though. For my business law class in college we had to sit in on, I think, 20 hours of court and then write a paper on it and I found the sessions of court very interesting and fascinating and ever since I have wanted to do jury duty.

I get letters in the mail but never attended one.

I heard that we can pretend to be racist and they will not pick you.

A few years ago my group was called in because they needed to select
a few alternate jurors. While I was sitting there watching the lawyers ask some questions to to the first couple people - I glanced at the Jury and low And behold...one of the jurors was none other than Tom Hanks! Only in LA....

This case ended up being for a home invasion/robbery of an elderly woman. He beat her up pretty bad & stole about 7500 bucks. Him & his family tried to play the system and have a cousin confess to the crime for a probated sentence(since he's a first time offender). After he found out probation was off the table because he would've been charged with the aggravated robbery & perjury for lying during the grand jury, he changed his mind. The defendant had a drug charge & DUI so his minimum sentence would've been 5 yrs in the pen. We ended up giving him 60yrs. He's not eligible for parole until 30 have been served.

He probably should've rethought his story after the 2nd shot. Luckily he was stupid.

Got called a few months ago. Was put in the pool for a DUI case. I was defendant's peremptory challenge #1. Service done until the next time they call me.

Recently got a notice myself. My time is in a couple weeks. Served once before on a lame case where the family basically charged their adult daughter with trespassing so the state would pay for her drug addiction treatment.

I have only been called in once, but didn't serve on a jury. I was there from around 8:30 in the morning until about 3pm and not a single person was called in to a courtroom. We all watched 3 movies and were sent home.

That's embarrassing...

May have purposely misled people.....I was overseas and unavailable due to an approved reason.

But just so people know, not showing up rarely will impact you. The system is screwed up to a point where it is hard to track, and it would take too many resources to really crack down.

Didn't show up because I was overseas and has an authorized reason not to be there. But no one checked up on why I didn't show up because it would cost a city too much money to have a process in place.

I was selected for duty once during my residency. I was given an exemption due to being 8 hours away...

I'm fascinated by some of the comments, though. However, none are surprising...

Oh, so you left out important details to elicit a response from other people. Well played I suppose. Thanks for wasting our time.

Probably not the best idea to put this out there so soon after the trial...

It was a way to talk about how stupid the system is, for instance... Could you imagine going through financial hardships due to jury duty, it happens. Jurors gets paid like $20 a day for jury duty. There are people that have sat on long-duration juries and have had houses foreclosed, jobs lost, and savings depleted. What a great process that can ruin a person's life.

So it is an underfunded concept, and being underfunded can allow people to just not even go, and the system doesn't catch it. I skipped legally, but it would be very easily to skip jury duty if you just didn't want to get effed by the system.
