Default Can someone explain Zach Lavine to me

I watched this guy play and I don't get the current hype. Did he do something other than win the dunk contest that I should watch. He shot poorly all year (excluding a few games), and he is going to be transitioning to SG it seems.

The kid has all kinds of talent an even tho he didnt have the greatest rookie year i think hes gonna have a long NBA career. Yea his stuff is hot right now. At the Nationals this year anything of him was near impossible to find cause there was supposedly 2 guys buying everything of his

But what is his ceiling? I don't see him being a face of a franchise, but he could be a solid 3rd or 4th option. His prices seem insane, and that is fine by me, I have sold 3 cards of him for more than I anticipated.

I don't know a thing about the guy other than him winning the dunk title, and his draft night expressions caught on camera making him appear a douche from the start.

However, if you've been in the hobby a long time, you would see this kind of guy happens every few years. Gerald Green, Harold Minor, Cedric Ceballos, James White, etc...... People end up buying these guys up the first couple years their in the league. Maybe it's a dunk niche market?

He's Gerald Green 2.0. People investing heavily in him will lose big time if they don't sell before the hype dies down.

I couldn't agree more. Wiggins and KAT will own that team. Small market = low sales. When you add small market + 3rd best player on team AT BEST = I don't get the hype either.

That's the thing about hobby hype - no logic is required. People can subjectively like someone just due to super relevant things like bone structure, facial features, and what tattoos he has.

not to argue that Lavine is overhyped b/c I think he is, but the small market team is overblown. People like winners. If the t-wolves win, it won't matter that they're not a huge market.
Maybe they don't have the biggest following, but there are many dedicated Spurs collectors and they're not a big market. But they win. And people collect Duncan, and Parker, and Leonard, and Ginobili

I understand your point but the Spurs have won 5 titles in 15 years. Memphis wins year in and year out and nobody buys their stuff. Portland was good for several years and Aldridge and Lillard stuff sold a lot lower than similar players with similar stats.

This is true. Durant is in OKC, Melo had a big following in Denver, AD is in NO, etc.

My take on Lavine is that people see more than the dunking. He had several 20+ point games near the end of the season and since they aren't on TV much I'm guessing that came from getting to the basket since he can't shoot yet. That skill of getting to the basket is at a premium (and the reason I think Mudiay will be very good this year for Denver on a side note).

Furthermore, he is exciting. There is a reason why I and many others started liking Oladipo. Or why people like Rose (before yesterday's weird news), Durant, Lebron or even guys like Jeremy Lin, they provide excitement.

The sooner BO members understand that it is excitement not ability that drives the hobby the faster they will understand ()even if the reaosn is stupid) why prices are where they are.

I went to the Jazz minny game late in the season last year. Kid was amazing. Has a chance to be a big time star.

A chance.

But honestly most guys don't have a chance.

What can't he do? If he puts together all the pieces he could be one of the best players in the nba. He will more likely be Gerald green. But he's got a chance.

In April, he had 21/6/6. I think people buy into this 8 game stats as the indicator that he will be good.

However, deep inside, his number is one of the worst in the league. His RPM is 4th worst. His DRPM is 3rd worst. His WAR is the worst.

I fully understand that these stats are not perfect. However, there is just no way to have the worst rank in these stats while people still think he is the 3rd best RC in the league (his NT pricewise).

Bad money has to go somewhere. Keep.encouraging it to keep it away from the real players.

A member of the Sports center generation. Basketball players aim for the dunk and football players for the slobber knocker in spite of the team goal.

Explanation - He can jump really high

Reality - LaVine is like drafting a 17 year old kid when you could draft out of High School. He's athletic, he's long, and he's explosive - his basketball IQ (right now) sucks. He isn't a great shooter. He doesn't get to the line. He settles for jump shots.

LaVine would have been one of those HS kids that went in the 15-25 range based purely on athletic ability but the team knows he's got a few years before he's going to be consistently productive if he pans out.

LaVine is going to his natural position. He was forced to be a PG. Now he can move around and get open shots which he did good at during Summer League.

Kobe won the Dunk contest during his Rookie Year and he didn't put up good numbers at all. No one knew how great he would be at the time. Hey, you never know. Zach LaVine could be the next Kobe or one of the next GOAT. :P

There are many dunk champions that have done well in the NBA. There are also quite a few that it was their only accomplishment. Not saying that Lavine fits in either but the odds are stacked against him in my opinion
