Someone just posted a 96-97 Kobe rc legacy card that’s missing a stamped number at the back. It’s on eBay and he believes it to be a backdoor card through bankruptcy. That’s new, I thought there were never any confirmed backdoored cards for 96-97 flair legacy.

Maybe there were uncut sheets that haven’t been sliced n’ diced until now.

Here’s a thread on 97-98 just for reference

I’ve seen that thread and I am aware of backdoor 97-98 flair showcase cards and uncut sheets. However, based on previous conversations in this site, I was told that there were no previously known backdoor or uncut sheets of 96-97 flair showcase legacy.

I know, it's mentioned in the same thread. I was just posting it for easier access/reference.

Does anyone know about Topps variations and errors of 96-97 Stadium Club - Series 1? Last week I came across a silver foil version of the Kobe Bryant (R12) subset rookie, purchased it in person from a longtime collector. Didn't actually think anything of it at the time. I am kind of still wrapping my head around the enormity of what I think it is... one-of-a-kind from a single set of silver foil that was produced as a test maybe and went out in packs (hard to do silver by mistake, however Topps was rushing to be first in getting the draft class on cardboard).

This variation simply doesn't exist on eBay, Google, or Blowout that I can see, unlike other rare Topps foil variations, such as 97-98 "Made in Springfield" Gold. Yet one veteran collector claims to have seen silvers of a couple other players from the same 25-rookie subset. (I assume if Kobe has a silver, at least one full sheet with Iverson, Marbury, Nash, etc. was printed).

Anyway, the 40-something collector who sold me his gold and silver R12s straight from the 90s binder was not trying to fool anyone. Any insight appreciated... (It's not "Members Only." No promos that I can find for this set. I have seen some R 12 on eBay without any foil at all, hence no name, and suspect-looking cutting. Backdoored? This one is definitely authentic and factory cut).

(A day later) The lack of feedback is, to be sure, exactly what I was hoping for. A blank slate in an era of manufactured scarcity is something genuinely rare and to be hoped for. In coin markets, a compelling print error that slipped out will always outperform a commemorative coin of set mintage. A rare stamp misprint or variation will outweigh a first day commemorative printing. Take that logic and apply it to the world of 90s basketball cards, or today's color waves. I don't think such idiosyncratic variations are even allowed to exist today, in the age of digital design, robot assembly, and AI quality control... and it's a shame.

I have logged over 4,000 cards that have been exposed as altered, faked, mislabeled, etc... onto spreadsheets that have been organized by sports. https://www.tiffanycards.com/buyer-beware

Thats a very recently graded PSA card, why are you questioning it's authenticity?

I can't pull up the link, but the thing I have heard to tell a real from fake 1996-97 BMOC is the dot on the i. The real one has more detailing around the edges where the dot is more outlined. On fakes the edges around the dot go straight down and don't outline.
