Yes, I approached buying like this, keep buying until I pull a Lafreniere YGs of some kind. It was about 9 blasters and 4 Megas before I did it. I spent about $350 or so in my retail adventures.

Hit a Lafreniere YG Canvas, got $200 for that. Then, all the other YGs, inserts, etc did decent (kept three for watch them purposes, and 1 for my collection). Came out ahead and had a ton of fun.

The blasters with the Jumbo YG is the best, 1 in 14 shot of hitting Lafreniere, and all of them are the bigger rookies in the product. I would buy all of those up if I could find them.

The only bummer, you could have blasters with only 1 YG or megas with only 2. Usually, you knew you'd get 2/3. Although, I did have a blaster with 3 YGs plus the Jumbo YG, so that was nice.

Not a huge hockey collector despite being a diehard Ranger fan but had to rip some retail (tins) to get my guys. No luck in the first 8 tins but hit these back to back in tin 9 and 10.

I know people aren’t nearly as high on Kravtsov these days but I keep tabs on him regularly and his highlights are spectacular. Hoping he can fill out and figure out his play away from the puck. Fingers crossed he develops into a second liner supporting either Mika or Breadman!

Anyways, I’ve been lurking the hockey section trying to learn more about the hobby. I appreciate all of your informative posts!

THANKS!
usually if you want affordable hockey the best bet is an lcs with last years stuff selling them at half off. upper deck is about 2-3 years ahead with guys in product so if you want guys that are going to be stars this year look at 16,17,18 stuff.

Yeah I have no illusions about how the team will do this year in this division, especially with the defense and bottom 6. As long as the kids play well and show some progress I’ll be happy!

Depends how “Damaged” they are. ...a damaged corner is going to have to be absolutely mauled in order to warrant replacement, and not much of the most common damage is “actionable” in that sense. It’s mostly just frustrating.

Frankly, it’s better for the hobby if they do nothing...you think e-packs kill the value of young guns? What do you think a “mail-me-a-9.5 to replace all my young guns” program would do?

Ah man! After seeing some of the horror stories in this thread (and firsthand) I immediately stopped after opening that Lafreniere. The top right corner isn’t perfect, but overall the card could grade out a BGS 9.5 (with a 9 corner subgrade). Will probably send it off to BGS soon, but have no intention of selling it.

Anyone ever have a mega box for Series 1 set off the detector at a Target/Walmart? Just bought a mega and set off detector as I walked out, the guy takes the mega box and goes I wonder if it's this, and sure enough he swipes the mega box multiple times and it continues to set off the alarm (yes I paid for it lol). Anyone know if this is a sign of what's inside? I'm sure i'm overthinking it too much...

Some boxes have like a white anti-theft strip so its fairly common that sports cards will set off the alarms. I ignore it and keep going. I wish it meant there is a big hit in one of them, that would be cool!

Yeah i'm assuming it's going to mean nothing, I wouldn't have known what set it off or stopped if the guy didn't stop me.

Was hoping someone would say that's a printing plate or something lol oh well hopefully this box will be the lucky Lafreniere box!

the "fun"approach to ripping hockey is to buy boxes, stick them in a closet for 2-3 years and then open them when the young guns are finally getting going. The top guy every year is always going to score a few goals but it's the ahos, points, krugs, panarins, pastrnaks you're going to discover and love.

I have friends who are dealers and it's always interesting what sells. Rangers, Minnesota, Islanders, Blackhawks, vegas even non all stars it just sells so well. Then they get la kings stars like kopitar, arizona, tampa, san jose sharks who've contended and it won't move unless its roenick.

Is Martin Kaut the common Lafreniere box-buddy? Seems like the going trend on the breaks I’ve seen, and checks out against direct experience - in that he’s one of the few remaining suspects i have only pulled singles of so far in my fruitless quest to finish my YG set...Jonas Johansson and Alexander Alexeyev also seem pretty common, however i have three each of those guys to go with no Lafreniere.

Karmic payback for getting Jack Hughes in the third pack i opened last year.

I used to buy 3 hobby boxes a year and the best yg out of 16 I pulled was an alexander nylander. I buy one $15 hanger of hoops premium-my first nba pack since 1992 and pull a zion purple disco rookie card.

I'd love to go to canada and see the shops up there. I'm sure they all the awesome new stuff up there but I'm also sure they don't have panarin/helleybuck young guns at shows w/guys from iowa selling them for $10 a pop.

I’ve never had this rough a time finishing a set of YGs...at this point it’s the only thing I still collect out of packs, so it’s less frustrating than it would be if I wanted to move on to something else before S2 drops in March. Just happens to be that I’m only missing the one I’d have to pay 3x the cost of a box for to buy as a single in good condition...on the flip side I now have an unexpected reason to follow the careers of Liam Foudy and Egor Zamula. I’m currently hoping Lafreniere ends up having a real rough rookie year so I can backfill the Lafreniere-shaped crater in this somehow still incomplete collection:

It's a pretty weak Series 1 tbh. Hard to know if Series 2 will be any better. Stutzle will be in it. Maybe Byfield too?
