Hidden in the post is that the person who got the IV set got them ALL in one case!

FYI...its Ben Baller. Your argument is null and void.

Bad take, amigo. I AM a Julio fan and AM collecting (RC) cards to go with some '19 and '21 goodness and one of the only cards I even care about is that black refractor SP. When Topps inevitably and inexcusably goes back to making Baller just a blinged out regular chrome card with gem accents, I'll rejoin you in arguing against its viability as a card line. Until then, 2022 Baller stands out in a crowded year.

You can badmouth Ben Baller all you want, but that base Julio SP is sharp as hell, especially compared to the other 28 Chrome Julio variations that seem to be available.

Baller Chrome is the bastardization of Topps Chrome

you can say all you want about "the black refractor base look so good!"

The brand should have never existed in the first place.

They clog up eBay searches. Sure the color is easy to hit, since they made so little of it

You all are getting mixed up. I said "IF INVESTING". Investing isn't talking about your collecting. And investing has NOTHING to do with the look of the card (in todays version of the hobby), unfortunately. Ben Baller attached is a future death nail to that card.

Or a saving grace in the forever sea of base looking photo variations.

Hold my beer!

If you find yourself jumping on any bandwagon involving Ben Baller, you should reevaluate your choices in life.

Oh I'm no fan of him in general, I'm just saying the base cards in this year's set (and the Julio in particular) are very nice, and I like the fact that they are distinct from the same base that has been in several other chrome sets.

The distinction is what I am trying to express

That's fine, except you could say the same thing about Sapphire and Sapphire certainly looks poised to stick. And it should: when done right (blue sapphire atomic/cracked ice) it's a jaw dropping design element that makes cards pop. I'd contend that the Black Refractor base do the same for 22 Baller.

I have no idea as to future values but I know it's a set that will stand out to me - for positive reasons - in what was a pretty damn confounding year in baseball cards - for mostly negative reasons.

If Ben Baller becomes the black refractor variation for chrome from here on out, I think it will become a staple and commonly collected card. Like many others I hated previous Ben Baller releases but it is silly to think that the black refractor design won't be sought after.

I compare it to people who paint stupid designs or color schemes on their Lambos. It's a Lambo- why would you muck it up with the BS paint job?

Same thing for the black refractor variation. That design can sell it itself- I'd be surprised to hear any collector say they wouldn't want that. But you put that stupida$$ Ben Baller logo on it and you've killed the value of it, or more accurately, you have removed a sizable percentage of the market that desire to acquire it.

I also think a lot of people aren’t taking into account the younger and more modern collectors. Collabs are cool and desirable for a lot of the mainstream and media consuming audience under 30.

Wether anyone here wants to admit it or not...Ben Baller is seen as a joke to most of the hobby community. Its a gimmick. You don't INVEST in releases that the community laughs at. You immediately alienate your buying audience.

i agree that there are too many Sapphire releases now.

How do the baller parallels look, since the base cards are black. you have black/blue, black/gold, etc?

Exactly. Love the look of the cards but that logo totally ruins it for me.

It's a good point. I wouldn't deny that I'm an old fart. But I'm actually younger than Ben Baller, haha.

My counterpoint would be that even the youngsters don't know who the F this guy is. I think he's famous for connections to other old farts like Dr Dre (yes, admit it folks, people like Dr Dre are now old AF). I'm sure Topps can do better than this if they want to go that route.

The blowout community is probably 15% of the hobby community and is wrong about probably 70% of what will actually catch on in modern cards. Look logofractor, gilded, cosmic, and this year’s ben baller. You can’t say these are because of a crazy market boom because a lot of these came out in bearish times. The hobby is shifting to new buyers with new desires. I personally still prefer the paper flagship over chrome cards, but the money does not see it that way and I live with that. People just need to come to the realization that what they think is a joke may be a minority opinion especially when an open market economy which is sports cards is telling you the demand for a product is increasing massively.

Trying to stay as objective as possible.

I could care less what BO members think. BO is the minority as you said. Im talking to high end buyers daily. Go look on IG, Twitter, Facebook Groups and at card shows. Ben Baller is laughed at.
