I agree that there has to be something else going on. You don't just dump starting pitching under team control for another year.

According to a New York Post article, Cashman believes Bader is

Quote:
one of the elite center field defenders in the game.

“I didn’t acquire Montas so I could move Monty,” Cashman said after the deadline had passed. “Me and my staff entered the trade acquisition market of exports and imports trying to figure out the overall ecosystem of that roster and what fits best with a plan for October and how could we best be flying high at the best of our abilities when it counts the most in October and what gives us the most amount of quality choices? That’s what went into every single decision we made.

So we’re excited about what Bader can bring down the line for us. We have to wait on it, we get that. But it came at the expense of a quality choice we already had.
It will allow the Yankees to play Judge exclusively in right field for the playoffs and Bader in center which means Hicks probably won't be on the playoff roster.

Bader is an upgrade from Hicks in every aspect of the game.

I'll give credit where credit is due and say that Hicks had a great first two weeks of July: 1.300 OPS. But the latter two weeks were right back to where he was previously: .592 OPS.

Bader also lacks power but his hits are more evenly distributed throughout. GG defender with great arm (mid 90s) and speed. Only strikes out 17% of the time compared to Hicks' 22% (DJLM is at 12% for reference).

While it's not an enormous upgrade, Bader still fits this lineup way better than Hicks does. We as fans wanted more contact, better defense, and speed and that's exactly what Cashman gave us. Just look how different the back half of the lineup is compared to the WC game last year:

2021 WC Lineup:

Rizzo 1B
Judge RF
Stanton DH
Gallo LF
Torres 2B
Gardner CF
Urshela 3B
Higgy C
Velazquez SS

2022 Potential Playoff Lineup:

DJLM 3B
Judge RF
Rizzo 1B
Stanton DH
Gleyber 2B
Benintendi LF
Bader CF
IKF SS
Trevino C

Contact, speed, defense.

Forgot to add my thoughts on losing Monty; confusing on the surface and I definitely thought something else was coming but as we all know, it didn't.

What I think is going on is Cashman and the front office are 100% locked into the playoffs. They probably looked at Monty and figured that he would not make the roster anyway.

Theoretically, in a 7 game series, you only need 4 starting pitchers which in this case would be Cole, Montas, Sevy, and Cortes. Taillon, German, and Schmidt would be your depth with guys like Gil and Abreu saved for emergencies.

You’re making a lot of sense and I am beginning to back away from the ledge I just wish we could see the finished product in a playoff game right now to see what it would look like.

I'd have kept Monty and made Taillon/German the odd man out. Not only do I think he's better, but now you have no lefty starters.

Is Gil back? I thought he had TJ surgery?

I also would have rather have sent someone like German. Dude isn't the awesome pitcher he was that 1st year and then got into trouble. They alsi better hope Sevy is available for the playoffs.

Cards probably didn't want Taillon/German just like you. Lol

Oh yeaaaaaaaaaaa.... sheet. I had a nagging feeling typing Gil's name in that sentence. That explains it.

Cardinals probably wouldn’t budge unless it was Montgomery.

No judge in the starting lineup today which stinks because he usually hits a home run when I watch a weekday afternoon game.

I think they play almost everyday in August. He's going to need a game off or two to stay healthy.

Yes, it’s tough standing still for a few hours and swinging a bat 10 times.

I'm talking about taking a day off. Baseball players are the biggest wusses of any major sports players.

It's going to be a long game.

Another pitcher trying to put them down early.

Do all their pitchers seem to take forever to pitch the ball. Cole off to his stellar start 3 runs in nobody out face it he ain’t the guy. 3 runs down before he even registers an out and Seattle has Castillo on the mound good luck with that.

4-0 Seattle.

Cole = worst free agent pitcher pickup.

If Cole numbers are as bad as they just showed with Higgy vs Trevino, then why is Higgy in there?

We should have traded him to the Cardinals for Bader.
