Exactly! Pretty crazy right??? Ortiz and Jeter still remain the most recognizable names in baseball... and they haven’t played in years!

That’s probably a bad example. I’m a huge sports fan and know of the superstars in just about every sport BUT Hockey. In my opinion, Hockey is a bit disconnected when it comes to having well known Superstars that are recognized Universally.

Purely my opinion. As for past Hockey, I mean I do own a 1979-80 OPC Gretzky Rookie, so definitely know about him.

If you want to see how bad it is (and how much hand wringing MLB has had about the topic) you can read tons of sources, as it has been written about extensively over the last couple years

For instance a quick google search popped these as the top two articles on “Mike Trout name recognition”:
— ~1 in 5 Americans know who he is (puts him on par with middling players in the NBA): https://www.washingtonpost.com/sport...306_story.html
— ~1 in 2 American “sports fans” know who he is... most other top players are at ~100% recognition: https://www.bbc.com/sport/amp/baseball/48894773

The whole Soto Acuna Tatis debate seems pointless like Ginger vs Maryanne.
I wouldn’t kick any of em outta my bed.

Dude you’ve got way too much time on your hands. I could easily put together a bias analysis on how Mike Trout is one of the most recognized athletes on the planet. Very simple to cherry pick what’s posted online. Seems like you may need a hobby (in addition to collecting cards)

They tell me “you only learn when you are wrong”... the whole Jeter thing helped me rethink my early re-entry to collecting, where I’d been overly focused on performance.

You are definitely right: stardom is more than on-field. It requires the fans to love you. And that can occur through things beyond their playing metrics. What championships they win, what stories they build, what clutch play they had, what leadership they demonstrate, what engagement with the fans.

I’m not great at it, by no means.

But what Jeter taught me to look for goes to what I’m digging about Tatis right now.

Show me those stats. I’m open minded, as I have no dislike for Trout. He’s great! I was excited to take my son to watch him play last year - was awesome as he hit his first HR at Fenway in that game.

With that sad: all the articles I’ve seen written across sports media repeat the same messages that I’m just parroting to you here.

Given these folks are paid to know more than me, I generally pay attention. And when they all say the same thing it tends to make me feel I can draw a line.

I’m not saying you’re wrong man. I just think this is such a subjective topic that gets difficult to separate facts vs opinion.

Nope - I’m completely open to debate. I never troll. Isn’t my thing.

I just put facts out there that sports writers are discussing. And I don’t see counter arguments coming out.

I’d like to learn, if you know of other sources that disagree.

I agree with this! When as a hobby we can debate the future of the game and hobby it’s a good place for baseball. In some ways we’re splitting hairs, but to others it’s thousands of dollars in future returns.

We speak of the big 3, but how long does that hold true? When do we turn the corner? Who is next? When do we realize we didn’t appreciate what we’re seeing right in front us, meaning if you’re in the Tatis camp did you miss appreciating what Soto or Acuna brought to the game? Time, and only time, will determine who is who!

Im not caught up on your back and forth w/ pewe...but you're saying that Trout is one of the most recognized athletes on the planet? What's the criteria for "most"? Is that top 10 on the planet, top 20, top 30?

Read my post again. I was illustrating that I could pick and choose articles/posts online to create a bias view of Trout. I’m not saying he is the most recognizable athlete on the Planet. I was also insinuating the difference between facts and opinion.

Ask 100 different people the same question of who’s the most recognizable athlete on the planet and you could get 100 different answers.

If you’ve got $250 to spend on El Niño, graded or raw, what are you purchasing?

Tatis is going to start a new trend of bat flipping around the MLB. It will become much more accepted, like Korean baseball, and I'm all for it.

Agree - let’s get this thread back on track

The question I’m sure many of us are wrestling with: if we feel uncomfortable dropping $500 on a high-print-run card, what is a poor man like me to focus on as a potential pickup. That doesn’t also fall into the base card trap of unknown huge print runs.

I continue to feel like I have few good entry points

Raw heritage action??? Try to source a Stadium club image variation?
