________.
My first thought was no X-Men #1. But yeah can't really argue with the other 3.

Like the baseball card rushmore, I sense there will be vast consensus on 3, and the last hotly debated, which I have chosen as Hulk 181. Not because it’s among the most valuable….there are a ton more valuable….but because iconic and first full appearance of Wolverine , who at least in marvel cards is 2nd top dog next to Spider-Man in popularity. So this group sort of summarizes the top 4 characters for me, from the two biggest comic companies.

There is a major argument for Fantastic Four #1 in that 4th spot. Or perhaps Captain America Comics #1 or Marvel Comics #1.

One thing is pretty clear: of all the Rushmore’s, be it baseball cards, basketball cards, TCG’s, comics, or whatever…nonsports cards might actually have the most diverse lists. Some of these other ones like comics it’s like 3 that are undisputed then the 4th. For example, basketball is probably 86 Fleer Jordan, 2003 Exquisite Lebron RPA, 1980 Topps Erving/Magic/Bird, ________.

I'm my opinion, that is perfect.

A huge key for sure. A couple things counting against the X-men #1 for me is the whole 'old X-men' in the outdated uniforms, and while it has several first appearances, it's more quantity over top tier quality (out of Prof X, Magneto, Iceman, Angel, Cyclops, Beast, Marvel Girl/Jean, who is the most popular....I guess either Magneto or Jean? Big characters but not top in Marvel).

If anything the first appearance of the X-men team itself is the most important first appearance there. But if we are talking first team appearance #1 issues....I'd take the FF #1 over it, just because it was so vital in ushering that concept into the Silver Age, starting the Marvel age of comics. But no question that at least now, X-men does surpass FF in terms of movies and pop culture.

But I'd rather keep the rushmore to the first appearances of the top characters. Some people might argue against me choosing Wolverine over say, Hulk, Thor, Iron Man, or Cap.....but at least in marvel cards Wolvie's popularity seems to be cemented as #2. The 90s animated show and his overall popularity in the 90s helped that a lot.

Narrowing non-sports to only 4 would be an endless debate.. I think you'd have to find a way to narrow down parameters. Plus only 1 card per series. There are so many key star wars cards that you'd argue for 3 month over those. There's the insanely rare "praying yoda" promo. Oh toss in star trek and the first contact data auto. Dark angel, so the Alba or Cameron? One's sexy the other is one of the most influential directors of the modern era. We got that lucas/speilberg/ford triple. Man that's a lot of options.

1/1, triple signed, that's about all I got on it. It's in that set along with like everything else Indy (at that time).

Topps Indiana Jones Masterpieces, and Kingdom of the Crystal Skull. But only 1 in each of those sets. There were also Lucas single autos in those two sets as well as IJ Heritage, all limited to 8 in each set.

I didn't know they made it in two sets. Learn something new everyday.

Man that's gotta be an incredible triple, wonder if one ever surfaced on the market and what the price was. Astronomical Im assuming if one per set, 2 total. Would have an argument for mt rushmore imo. But it's one of those that is just too rare to be iconic.

I was totally unaware of these Lucas autos in IJ sets. I do see a single Lucas signed one from Crystal Skull for 15k obo on the bay, so yea outside my price range. But if could add any nonsports auto....Lucas would be way up on the list. Along with John Williams.

My buddy has hulk #1. It was given to him. I told him like 10 years ago he needs to get it graded asap. He finally did. CGC 8.5 I told him it belongs in a museum

Great thread. I agree with the general consensus that it's impossible to narrow everything down to just four cards. For example, how do we compare a Rittenhouse Emilia Clarke AUTO to a Pokemon card to a Marvel card to a vintage chewing gum card like the Mars Attacks Prize Captive?

25 years from now, when one of them is President of the United States and the other is Ruler of the Universe, this will be the card to have.

Yea that's my main takeaway from it also.

I guess an easier (but still will not be unanimous) question is: what is the rushmore of nonsport auto cards. That basically eliminates vintage cards, and things like rare marvel parallel cards.

This is what my top 4 might look like:

-Harry Potter triple
-Star Wars triple (I dont know much about these but see there is one from 2014 Chrome perspectives, although it's stickers)
-Rittenhouse Iron Man Downey Jr auto (as himself I guess although a toss up)
-Topps John Williams (although a sticker)

I could certainly see arguments for ones like Emilia Clarke, or any of those Lucas IJ ones mentioned, particularly the triple with Spielberg and Ford (but I've never even seen this card, so it's hard to call it a top 4 auto in the hobby)

I had the Downey as Stark (pack pulled by me) for about 10 years, but I eventually sold it. (One year too soon, as is turned out, but good for the buyer.)
I probably would've sold the Clarke by now if it wasn't part of a much larger Game of Thrones autograph collection.

With the above proving I would sell choice material, there are 4 autographs I have that I could simply never imagine selling. I've had Stan the longest, since '98 and got the other 3 over the past 10 years. Never thought I'd get any of them on a card, and all of them hard-signed, to boot.

Pulled this one almost 25 years ago and it is still one of my favorite cards of all-time!

Question from the uninformed, who is the twin peaks guy and why does it look like the signature is upside down? Or am I just seeing things?
