Yeah I’m definitely trying to work on making sure I’m buying the card and not the grade. I’m trying to get better at it. My more “valuable” cards are mostly BGS, but that’s when BGS was king. I don’t have much interest in cracking and resubmitting because I’ll just mess the card up somehow. PSA 9’s are just so much cheaper than PSA 10’s that there is definitely some steals out there.

Quick Bowman question. Why are it seems like 70% of graded Bowman Chrome autos BGS? I like the auto grade and guess that's part of it, but they still sell for substantially less. With most cards I look at, the grading is probably 70% PSA, but only with Bowman does it shift to the bulk seemingly being BGS. Are there a few Bowman breakers getting a huge bulk deal with BGS or is there something I'm missing here?

For a while PSA didn’t do a separate auto grade so BGS was preferred for a dual grade for the auto. BGS held about 90% or so value vs PSA. Only in the last 12 (or even 6) months has BGS values really #@#@#@#@ the bed.

So if you’re looking at the 2016 1sts back then a BGS 9.5/10 was almost the same as a PSA10 so it was fairly normal to go that route.

BGS True Gem Mints going for 50% or PSA9 values now. I always thought the PSA slabs were nicer than than the bulky BGS ones, but man beckett value crumbled.

People have always said there was value in BGS 9.5’s, but with AI on the horizon at PSA it will take some of the emotion out of the crossover. Find strong 9.5’s and be prepared down the line to submit to PSA when some of the subjectivity is gone from the process with AI instituted.

I guess some is the bias against non-pack issued cards. I actually like the Montgomery stamp. Looks kind of classy. Crazy good price there. You could probably throw it up on Ebay or Myslabs with a high price tag and someone would bite eventually with that low pop.

90% of the hobby doesn’t know what Monty is nor do they care. They know the #410 base and it’s packed issued parallels. The more you have to explain it, the less likely it’s going to stick.

I hear you and agree that's the only logical explanation. That said, if he continues to do his thing, it's only a matter of time before they get some degree of respect. Especially with 2019 being the inaugural monty set.

It’s anecdotal, but I feel like the shoulder injury may have been good for Fernando’s batting. By that I mean, he looks like a guy who is more focused on his form (because now he has to), rather than trying to manufacture something with his strength. In my imagination he is realising his natural base strength is more than enough to put the ball where it needs to go, and so all he has to do is make contact and good things will happen.

Agree, he had to make adjustments and put focus on it, and it has looked good so far.

Not to be glib, but who cares about a stamp (or other niches)? I've seen the same thing in the Acuna thread: "ASG stamp / Complete Set 698 / Mini are low pop, they're going to take off!" The only one that appears to be the case with is 3D.

Its a long game thing. If Tatis achieves a career where hes a generational play and becomes the face of baseball similar to how griffey was in the 90s it wont matter bases will carry their value, but theres no denying pop reports are absolutely monster in the base S2 410 and Base Chrome 203.

S2 410 - PSA 20,565 (12,781 10s), BGS 843, SGC 1,043.

TC 203 - PSA 9,347 (6,948 10s), BGS 370, SGC 555.

When the 410 base already has over 22,000 cards without the other grading companies, and endless raws out there theres gonna be a problem of oversupply if demand ever slows. Theres always avid collectors who build sets or collect rare cards. They dont want a 7th base PSA10, theyre gonna pay for a card they dont have which will be a parallel or low pop.

If he does become an icon, big fans/collectors will branch out into rarer cards and if you have the low pops its a sellers market.

Agree. These types of cards always fall short. They forever will. Of course they will increase if he plays well and as other cards increase. And they are cool to collect/own. But IF "investing"...don't over think it. Stick to the basics/popular parallels/shiny/etc. Stick to what people know and want.

...again not saying the Monty Club cant be worth good money. But it will never compare to the basics/key cards. The scale will never be the same.

My experience (that I don’t desire to replicate) is that they appreciate at 1/2 the rate of more traditional flagship cards.

For instance...

Acuna 3D PSA10 cost me $325 in April 2019... at the same time his “bats down” PSA10 was a similar price.

Today eBay recent auctions
— 3D = $1500ish
— Bats down = $3000ish
