Not necessarily at all. It happens quite often in football due to increased pressure loads from big bodies landing on top of ankles and adding additional force during awkward tackles. There's only so much range of motion the tendons and ligaments in the foot can take.

It's a pretty worst case scenario here, so chances are it probably isn't. But that's something we'll have to wait for the MRI to uncover.
Haha yeah I am aware that in football things can happen differently. Generally speaking in basketball, a high ankle sprain which is totally different than a normal ankle sprain looks very different than what happened here. The one I am thinking of would be Landry Shamet's High ankle sprain, just a completely different kind of a thing. Not really comparable to what happened here. Same with D Foxes. The only one even remotely similar was Lonzo Ball's and he was literally carried off the court and there was extra weight put on by the opposing player after the roll which made it worse. Just going by eye test here. In basketball, a high ankle sprain is typically very different than what we saw here.

All this is gonna do is tear some scar tissue that was laid down to act as his ATFL. It'll have some internal bleeding and have some swelling and bruising, but he'll be fine. His ankle being plantarflexed (pointing down) will typically protect the CFL and PTFL (these ligaments are involved as degree of severity of ankle sprain increases).

MRI in this case is unnecessary, really, but they have the 1 million dollar machine to use at will, so why not take a picture, right? X-ray will come back negative, MRI will show mainly chronic ligament injury, I'm sure.

We'll see, I could be totally wrong, but I don't think so. I look forward to hearing the MRI results.
Great analysis. Thanks for sharing your expertise.

Yeah really tough to say. Most likely, worst case it's just a higher grade, garden variety ankle sprain.

Lulu's a warrior though, so if he can stand upright, he'll probably give it a go.

I just think like in football there's no such thing as a non contact play. Every play has contact. So it's real real tough to determine if a sprain is because of the contact or the way the ankle came down or a mixture of both. That's why I'd take the example a bit lightly, not discounting it just saying in basketball when I've seen serious ones it almost looks akin to an Achilles, like real scary collapse type stuff. I have some connections to Landry Shamet in real life so I literally remember praying for him that he wasn't ruined forever with an achilles when he had that high ankle sprain because it looked so bad. It's real freaky. This one looked like a normal ankle roll, I'm pretty confident Luka will be okay.

Of course I'm not doctor so my opinion is almost worthless just basing it off the other doctor in the thread, my wife whose an athlete whose dealt with this and the eye test. It'll be real sad if we're wrong and it's serious tomorrow but I seriously doubt it will be.

Hope he doesn't miss any time.
This is nearly always going to happen from forced dorsiflexion and eversion. Basically that jams the talus (bone on the top of the foot up into the tibia and fibula and with that rotational component will stress the tissue attaching the tibia and fibula to each other. In other words, that happens from the foot being forced up and out, where his foot was down and in. Totally different mechanism.

Klay suffered a high ankle sprain in the Finals. It's impossible for us to begin and diagnose these types of things without a structural view. Things can be so deceiving because different athletes can exhibit different pain thresholds.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4OS2UJTy3TA

Kobe literally played through ailments that should have technically sidelined him for weeks if not months. He'd play through a broken leg if he could.

side note: Klay came back the next game. Even a high ankle sprain isn't a death sentence, so long as the player can tolerate the discomfort.

See how he grabs the upper left part of his leg? It's something they always do with this injury that's what I'm talking about with it being similar to an Achilles. The motion of the foot also looks like the opposite direction of what happened to Luka, this actually instills me with confidence.

Fear not! That's what interweb Doogie Howser is for.

I did not even realize his sprain was catalyzed by bumping knees with Kawhi...so it was a contact play. Never spotted that on the live replays.

Even he couldn't hypothesize what the severity is. It's basically impossible to tell because we can't see internal ligaments from our tv screens.

But my gut tells me he'll at the very least be giving it a go in game 4. Just knowing his personality I can't see him completely sitting out. But the coaching staff may eventually have to interject and save him from himself.

This is spot on with what we're thinking. A high ankle sprain is generally non contact like I was saying, this is looking pretty normal. This guy never hypothesizes because the backlash would be HUGE if he got it wrong- not worth the risk. Makes sense. I watched it and he makes no specific claims about what to expect on an MRI- this is purposeful, it's content. I don't really feel like this video tells us much. I'm expecting pretty positive news, it just doesn't look too serious. And gosh not to question the guy but he mentions reinjuring the ankle but this is the other ankle, not the one he's sprained before.

I love Luka, but this is why you don't put everything in 1 basket. Bought Bol Bols way before his first re-start game and Tatis when Luka money was too much. I'm going Luka hunting and find some steals if Doncic is swollen, Mavs should be smart. It is a guarantee that Doncic will tell Mavs he wants to play.

I hope this is a joke man. You're much better off having Luka than Bol Bol lol

Yea... I'll be shocked if we see him in Game 4, which is a day game at 3:30 eastern, meaning he has less than 48 hours after the injury to recoup.

As much as he wants to be a hero, I don't want to see him play if it's too big of a risk, especially if they go down 3-1. Remember, this is only the first round. I'm reminded of RG3 in football, when he busted up his knee in Round 1 of the playoffs and he finished the game. He hurt it worse by playing and was never the same after that.

Would love to wake up Saturday to hear that there is no damage, no swelling at all, and he'll be ready to go, but not getting my hopes up here.

Looking back at my post in January and seeing him have several ankle issues since entering the league makes me wonder if playing professional basketball as a teenager and going through grown men physical training/contact at such a young age has a factor in this. Maybe his body didn’t get a chance to fully develop before putting the demands of professional basketball on it. Teenage pitchers throw out their arms by high school and medical professionals say kids shouldn’t play football until ~14 yrs old since the skull hasn’t fully developed making them much more susceptible to concussions. Just my thought of the day.

Some of these posts are ridiculous.... it’s a rolled ankle And thus sprain, not a broken leg. Some of these comments have me thinking you haven’t played a day of sports in your life to know that everyone who’s ever played ball has rolled their ankle. It never looks good, but it’s also never a lasting or serious injury. The doc in this thread explains it perfectly. Stop hypothesizing to beat down the Luka momentum, get in at lower prices because you missed the boat- you sound foolish.

Some people only feel the need to comment in these threads when something bad happens. I wonder why.

Agreed! Keep buying! Even if prices drop a tiny bit, they will shoot back up even higher at the start of next season.

The guy was turning and rolling his ankles every 20th game this year.

Amazing talent. Amazing player. But these threads feel more and more like the Old Aaron Judge threads.

You dont want him to have chronic ankle injuries that lead to more serious leg issues down the road.

Cant be disputed when you read people argue over his injury in relation to cardboard

The guy has had chronic ankle injuries all year. I have Luka cardboard and Luka sales paid for some nice things this year, and I root for him to do well but these ankle injuries are no fluke. A thumb sprain or eye poke are flukes. Ankles and feet are no joke. But carry on and ignore it as you worry about Prizm base prices.

BAIL NOW! He's gonna end up the same way Steph Curry did with all those chronic ankle issues...

Oh, wait...

If I were the Mavs I'd heavily invest in whomever worked on Stephen Curry's ankles. That doctor deserves a ton of credit for saving his career.

I agree, but I'm guessing the guys treating Luka didn't just roll off the night-shift. Every NBA player deals with foot/ankle stuff. Just comes with being an over-sized human being playing basketball every day. I mean is it so easy to forget what happened to PG? Where's he at nowadays?

The training staff will likely have to start focusing more with Luka on Weight training to stabilize muscles of the knee, hip so that when infliction happens, there is reinforcement.
