Upper Deck is garbage right now with their hockey products. Lazy designs, tons of redemptions that go on for years without being fulfilled. Their redemption site was down for WEEKS earlier this year. Their top of the line product The Cup was filled with plain white patches this year, it was pathetic.

Right but baseball is a different animal. You can't replace Topps flagship, Heritage, and Bowman. Those are iconic and highly collectible Topps products that can never be replaced. I'm sure Panini could make good baseball products but it would never be the same again if they were the exclusive.

I want to know what the flagship product for basketball and football are. I can't tell. That is a violent, major red flag to Panini. They seem like they do mid-end okay, and I don't care about high-end, but nope to them on low-end.

To me, most of these posts you could just take one manufacturer's name and replace it with any other. Seriously, they all have their flaws, and will continue to have them with absolutely no competition. What I don't get is those who think the market would crash if Panini was allowed to have a license as well. Maybe the market of the underperformer might collapse, but the performer would certainly gain from the other's loss.
Competition is good, period.

Hoops was definitely the basketball flagship but they watered it down and then added a bunch of low end products that nobody cared about. If Hoops was their main low end product it would definitely have "flagship" potential.

Football never really had one. Panini Football is a really cool product but it is retail only, and then you have Donruss. For football I think Donruss, Donruss Optic, and Prizm could easily be their main low end brands but of course they also added a ton of competing products.

So basically, Panini had the potential to create their own flagship brands but they screwed it up by producing way too many products and definitely too early into the season. We've had about a dozen 2018 football releases already and training camp hasn't even started!

I wish exclusives just didn't exist, and I wish Upper Deck was making licensed stuff again.

I wasn't arguing for a Panini exclusive. I love Topps' retro products just as much as you do (just not their price points these days).

I'm just pointing out the Panini releases a lot of low/mid-end football & basketball products which would be good competition for Topps' mid-end products (Stadium Club/Tek/Finest, etc.).

So glad to hear this after hearing all the talk about Panini and their endless supply of money. This is great news for the hobby.

What? It's great that a company which struggles to clear $10 million in profit each year is there sole license holder for MLB? Panini has made $1.5 billion on soccer stickers this year. On one product they've eclipsed years of Topps profit. How is ignoring the largest teasing card company in the world good for collectors? Monopolies are never good. Ever.

I doubt that MLB even talked to Panini or had a legit bidding process. Because if they did it wouldn't have been close.

Only reason Topps keeps MLB is because they'd become insolvent without exclusivity and everyone knows it. Too much history.

What is everyone going to do when Topps gets sold in a few years?

I'm not sure how a massive profit makes Panini a better choice in this situation.

I agree monopolies are not good, but the one (and biggest factor) in topps favor is it's rich history: heritage/flagship/chrome to name a few. If these ever go away, collectors will leave in droves.

What history does Panini have in baseball?? Donruss? (pooched when they bought out Donruss)

Topps has been bought out before and has still continued on.

Topps getting sold wouldn’t necessarily change much. The purchaser would still be able to release heritage and flagship and I’m sure many employees would be brought over to the new company as well. I’m not saying it would necessarily be a good thing, just wouldn’t necessarily be a bad thing

I think for football, Score has become kinda 'flagshippy' over the last couple years since Topps exited. I know I'm in the minority, but I wish UD made a licensed Baseball product again. I think they did a decent job if you set aside the nonsense a couple guys got them into....

I wish UD would sell Topps the intellectual property rights to product lines they have no use for.....

In the minority here. I happen to feel Panini designs are better than Topps. Would love to see elite cards with team logos.
