I did find it odd too that right after Gretzkys were mentioned it turns out he has some of those too. I feel like that’s a reoccurring theme with fake stories. “What are you looking for? Gretzkys? Oh yeah, I have some of those too!”
This was in the original post:

I had a family friend reach out about a sports card lot he bought recently. He doesn't know anything about baseball cards, but gave me a quick rundown of how he acquired it.

At least at some point, the friend didn't know what he was buying either.

I stand corrected! I think I was just trying to make sense of the story in my head.

There’s so many glaring holes in this story that don’t seem to bother OP. He’s either purposefully ignoring them, or really blind.

It took a matter of a minute to find that Mantle.
True, I should have looked, but I trusted him. I didn't think twice about posting the pic and even enlarged it to show detail. My fault for jumping the gun.

Lots of glaring holes because I don't have the entire story yet. Still trying to figure out what he has, but I was so excited I needed to tell someone. I really did think that photo was legit. I went off his word since he never steered me wrong in the past. Heck, the initial photo I posted has a 1965 Topps Mickey Mantle, a 1970 Topps Nolan Ryan, and a 1967 Topps Mickey Mantle. So I didn't doubt him a second that he found everything else. He picks up the 86 Fleer Jordan and a few other cards this Saturday from the owner. They were in a safe on the property.

Out of curiosity, how would OP's friend be attempting to scam OP?

I'm not understanding the pitchforks but I also don't know the potential "scam" either.

Congrats on the free Nolan Ryan signed baseball haha.

It’s not so much pitchforks at OP, but just that someone is pissing on us right now and telling us it’s rain. We’re just trying to figure out who.

But those are assumptions, no?

Not to mention, shouldn't we give OP some credit? Pretty sure he's smart enough to know what would be a good deal (should it even get there) or not.

All I know is that OP got a free signed Nolan Ryan baseball and has a lot of cards to look through (to help his friend) and wait on some more photos of the other "good" stuff.

OP post #41
Spoke with my friend last night. He is busy cleaning out the house and barn for the brother. I got the rundown of what happened with the family, but not going to reveal it till after this all has settled down. No new pics and I haven't looked at the cards yet. He did tell me the 1953 Topps Wax Pack has the gum on the folded side of the pack. I suspect that pack was searched years ago. The person who owned the house was a hoarder. So they are cleaning out the house and it's probably going to be a couple of weeks before they are done. He said he has stumbled across another tote of Baseball cards when cleaning. He stated it has binders full of 50s, 60s, 70s, and 80s baseball cards. Sorry to not pay off the tease, but eventually it will come. He has a new phone and stated he will start sending pics to me today. We will see.

The OP is the only one here to talk to. Pretty much everyone is open to the idea that the friend is screwing with him and he's innocent in the whole thing, but the photo of the Mantle being a cropped photo from a current eBay listing means 100% that someone is up to no good.

Some assumptions, yes.

But we do have a few facts and they don’t line up. OP asked to see a photo of the newly acquired ‘52 Mantle and was given a purposely cropped screen cap of a eBay listing that’s been going for a while. Maybe the brother that OP’s friend is buying from isn’t as clueless as we were originally led to believe and maybe OP and his friend are being played. It’s possible. Someone is lying to someone. There’s just a lot of answered questions at the moment.

The cropped photo, although weird, wouldn't be enough for me to put up a red flag. However, what MMF shared below is concerning.

Got it. I wasn't aware of the bolded part, and that's definitely concerning.

Now I understand why the situation better, thank you for explaining.

Whether OP is savvy enough to avoid getting scammed is irrelevant to whether someone is attempting to scam him.

All we know is the original story is not accurate. You asked for how the friend could be attempting to scam. You were given an example. No one is saying they know, or even believe that's what is happening. Just that SOMETHING is happening that is different from how it has been presented.

It's a sad story. 92 year old man's brother owned a card shop and committed suicide in 94. Card shop closed and 92 year old man took the cards and put them in storage on the brother's property. Some were stored in the attic, some in the barn loft, some in the house, and some in a Semi Truck Trailer on the property. House was gifted to 92 year old man's son. Son of 92 year old man went through the lot in the house and put away the ones he wanted in the safe. Son was eccentric and a hoarder. Designed and created chainsaw made wood animal sculptures. Son committed suicide this past year. Old man decided he had enough and is moving on. Paid my friend to clean out the house. Friend bought a bunch of stuff off him. Friend called me and asked me if this stuff is valuable. That's the story.

Story sounds plausible, it just the Mantle pic of a card that’s been on eBay for a while that makes ZERO sense.
