Default OMG, 40 Tom Brady RCs! How do I pick one?

Subtitled: When I was little, you got Topps, Donruss or Fleer and you ate the gum. None of this "Super-rookie-autographed-reflective-chrome" that kids these days are going for...

Okay, so I'm working my way back into the hobby after three decades on the sidelines. Man, things have changed.

In any case, instead of buying hundreds of packs and getting 17 Biff Pocoroba cards, I'm going to concentrate on fewer, higher-end cards.

One of the cards on the list is the Tom Brady rookie card. But how on Earth do I decide which one to get? Are there any that are considered "more legit" than the others? From what I can find online, the 2000 Playoff Contenders (regular, not championship ticket) and SP Authentic seem to have the best combination of value and popularity. That SP Authentic is a hideous-looking card, so that's off my list. The PC card seems to be $2,500 +/- with a 9 or better grade. That's kind of in range for me and is a nice-looking card.

The Bowman Chrome is also a nice-looking card.

Any other suggestions from people who know football cards better than I do? Thanks all.

Mike

You pretty much nailed it with your research. Those are the 2 cards to own. I only have the contenders right now. I intend to get more someday. The price of his cards have doubled since this time a year ago. Last year at this time you could have bought a BGS 9 contenders for around $1800 all day.

If it's just 1 Tom Brady the Contenders would be most people's 1st choice. I sold my TB collection during the "Perfect Season" & made a lot. Bought me a Harley but would have made a lot more if I held on to them. Right now my top wants are cards I haven't owned yet. Score Rookie Roll Call /50 or Champ Ticket.

The Contenders is the card to own, IMO.

Other than that, the Bowman Chrome Refractor is a tough card, and the regular Bowman Chrome in a PSA 10 is a good one to have.

I love my SP Authentic Brady. I really really do. But man it would be nice to own a high grade playoff contenders championship ticket.

anyways I think the BGS 9 playoff contenders are at a good value. There are no 10's. I think you'd be getting in at a good price point. I don't have one yet but plan on getting one sooner rather than later.

My only advice is, whatever you do, better do it quick.
Some of his cards have doubled in value, as other people have mentioned, and the Pats are favorites to win it all again.
If that actually happens, alot of his cards are gonna take on the 'ole diamond ring slogan.. "only 3 months salary"

Edit: Almost forgot.. watch out for the high end ungraded (raw) ones. There ARE more than a few trimmed cards out there.
I would suggest that if you are buying a raw high end (spa, contenders) off Ebay, that you insist that the seller confirm the dimensions of the card.

You'll just have to trust me on this.

So is it safe to assume you're probably not interested in buying my Tom Brady
Super-Rookie Autographed Reflective Chrome-Gold Prism Dual-Relic Rainbow Hologram Scratch'n'Sniff Retro Box-Bottom Anniversary Silver-Foil-Stamped 1/3 card ??

According to the Pop Report, the other two existing copies were waterlogged in basement floods and grade no better than 1.5 each.

Granted, mine only grades at an 8 ... but c'mon.
By this time next year, it'll still be valued higher than some small island countries.

The SPA is one of my favorites, I'm biased though cause i bought a box of SPA (yes took the shot) and in the last pack came a Brady rookie i was fregin floored. It'll forever be in my PC, while the Contenders is nice and obviously one of his more expensive cards. I went after some of the more rarer base rookies of his, if you check out ebay, you can always find a contenders for sale, but I like the Limited which I'm glad i picked up one 2 years ago, cause its hardly ever on the bay. The E-X rookie is another slightly cheaper card but i think its comparable to the Bowman chrome, has a similar refractor type look to it. Anyway, good luck on your venture, I'm about 30 rookies deep, always looking for more! I've attached a few pics of my favs.

Ive always liked the Leaf Limited myself, and could never figure out why it doesn't get more love in a monetary sense. Condition sensitive, numbered to 350 copies. It should be closer in line with the SPA when it comes to value.

here's mine..

Thanks! At this point, if I'm buying it online, I only get graded cards.

That's a really nice-looking card. I'll add it to the list. Just looked it up on eBay, the only one they have is a PSA 10, $1,250.

Thanks for all the advice. You get a Tommy Point.

Mike

I always thought the Playoff Momentum is a very underrated RC, great design and only 750 copies. I was lucky enough to pull one about a year or so ago, but it's long gone...

I like the SPA, SPX, Leaf Limited, and Bowman Chrome. Chrome looks great when its centering is on point. Looks terrible when its off.

Maybe I have a bias but people seem to sleep on his crown Royale autos...

If it's gotta be an auto, contenders for sure. But for my money I'd rather have a bowman chrome refractor and a few other low #'d parallels such as E-X essential credentials or fleer ultra platinum medallion. Something along those lines. Plus those types of cards are hard to find making the hunt all the more enjoyable. Good luck whatever you decide and welcome back

Pick the one you like and make it happen.

I think the only one I have left is Bowman Chrome. Got rid of all my other ones (low-end brands) in past.

Based on sales since the suspension was upheld, the SPA has now surpassed the Contenders. In June you could get a psa 9 for around 3k, its now in the 4500 range, that's a crazy jump!
