Default Set values

Guys,

I haven't been into sports cards in like 30 years. I have 86 - 87 - 88 Fleer Basketball sets. the 86 is in sleeves, and I think the rings of the 3-ring binder may have damaged a few cards, 87 and 88 are still sealed in the bricks they came in. nothing is graded. can you give me a ballpark idea of the values here just so I don't get duped by a local dealer. I can already see them salivating as I walk in with no idea of the values...

* the Jordan rookie already was worth big bucks even back then so it's in a thick brick (somewhere...) but it's not perfect, it's not centered, and I can't believe it, but it looks like damage from holding it eating away at the cardboard. they always told me that the oil from your hands could damage the card, but the kid version of me did not believe them... I do now!

Thanks!

Jordan RC

Sticker 86

Overall - binder has 82 set on the left 86 on the right

Sticker Set - 86 stickers left - 87 fleer set on the right, has stickers as well

Brick - this is fleer 89

Box - complete w/stickers

Receipt

If the Jordan is in one of them thick brick screw-down holders that were popular in that time, you need to carefully get it out now and pray the card doesn't peel.

Op, if you'd like some legit feedback I would suggest posting pictures of the key cards (mainly Jordan's) in this thread to get several opinions on what they might be worth/grade at/etc.

Post them public in this thread and be weary of advice you get through private message. Most members here a pretty good people (even though I argue with them about sports all the time!), but there are a few bad apples floating around.

Condition really means everything on these early cards, so try to get pictures as clear as possible.

"Thick Brick" is bad for investment, good for those of us collectors that enjoy saving money!

Here's my Jordan, that was obviously stored in one

I'll see if I can dig up the Jordan. I know it's in the house somewhere... I'm sure the rest is in a box somewhere, I've got the house to myself today, I'll see if I can get something together for pictures. I'm way more open to get an understanding of the value than offers.

I recall people here saying to put the thick brick screw-down holders in the freezer for awhile to safely remove the card. Does that still hold true?

Alright, had to check a few boxes, but pics coming in a few minutes! It looks like I may have the 81 or 82 topps set as well. The Jordan doesn't look that bad really...

Yeah get it out of that case and sent off to get graded asap! Looks to be in pretty good shape and as long as it wasn't cranked down too much you'll probably be ok. I had a couple 90's cards in cases like that with no damage after I removed them a couple years ago. Best of luck!

Is that receipt for the 86 Fleer set? You bought it way back in 1987? Wow, very nice.

No, I think it's for the next set that comes after the 86 sticker set. I'm not sure what year that set is, maybe 87?

Check for some of the other key rookies. The Barkley, Ewing, Olajuwon, Malone, Worthy, Mullin, Wilkins and Thomas from the 86/87 set can hold some value if they grade high enough

And the Jordan Sticker looks to be in good shape too and would probably get a decent grade

yea this is 3 full sets 86-87-88. It looks like I may have the 87 or 88 set twice. I have all of em for sure. I've never gotten anything graded, I'd be a little worried sending this stuff out through the mail...

I've only had a few cards graded and sent them insured to make sure I wasn't screwed over.

Either way the cards from the 86-87 set will sell decently either in a full set or individually

Ok fellas, I'm looking for ballpark numbers here. Is it worth it to grade? Isn't it like $20/ card + shipping to grade?

The Jordans and key rookies could very well be worth it. I would without a doubt grade the Jordan rookie and sticker.

All MJ RCs must be graded, regardless of grade

I agree with this. Grade will significantly impact value of the Jordans.

The others from the 86:87 set could be listed as a set or singles and still will sell either in the b/s/t forum here or on eBay. I'm sure there are many trying to complete the set or acquire cards and have them graded. I myself am still missing 2/3 dozen singles to complete my set.

I would also try to sell the other years you have as a set

It will be more than that if you go to PSA because you're going to have to get express (5day) minimum service on the Jordan RC due to value, unless you just want to declare it for under $500 and then it can go economy service.

I just sent a Jordan RC sticker & a 79 OPC gretzky and the PSA fee was 109 + my shipping to them, overall about $125 total.
