Default OPEN Discussion Michael Jordan's auto: Modern vs Vintage

Hi guys and gals, As a couple of you already know I recently purchased a large high-end collection that I am slowly selling off. One of the items that was in the collection was one of the most unique things I personally have ever seen. It is a Jordan auto rookie, but it is unlike any other MJ auto I've ever seen. After talking to the person I purchased the collection from, and other knowledgeable MJ folks, it turns out it is a "vintage" MJ auto signed long before the flight camp autos were available, and possibly going back to the mid 80s!

Apparently MJ has changed his signature over the years, and the vintage autos seem to be much more rare. Pretty cool link about the evolution of his signature over time here:

What's more? It appears every single modern MJ auto has a sticker placed ON THE CARD (usually on the back) So, if you think about it, some third party not from the card company and not named Michael Jordan, places a sticker on a really high-end MJ card. I understand some folks like the idea of an extra layer of authenticity (Even though almost all high-end collectors know and trust PSA/JSA authentication for AUTOs), but in my humble opinion, and in the opinion of many MJ collectors I've personally spoken with, that sticker not only could be hiding a pre-existing surface flaw, it also kills the surface condition of the card itself.

Also, any MJ card, including his rookie, could be brought to MJ's "Flight Camp" and this process can be replicated again and again and again, as where if you have a high end MJ, particularly his rookie, with the vintage auto, it can seemingly never be duplicated unless you personally know MJ, and even then, the auto won't look the same as it did 20-30 years ago because he's changed it. The collectors I've spoken to who have really put in a lot of time into the hobby and know there stuff seem to agree the vintage auto is much more desirable and infinitely more rare. As time passes, and more and more flight camp autos hit the market, I think a true vintage MJ auto with no 3rd party sticker will be a big differentiator, particularly on high end cards.

Since I am lucky enough to own such a card, I wanted to see what the good folks on BO thought about this subject. Obviously, I may sound biased since I own the card, but this is simply my opinion. Let's keep it cordial, but I'd like to know and welcome yours!

Full Disclosure: I own and am selling a MJ RC with a vintage auto.

Any ORIGINAL Jordan Autos from his playing days will remain the most sought after like his 96 SPx NNO, 97 SPx Promotions, 97-98 UD Jersey /Auto / 98-99 Jersy Auto (All 6 editions of these) / 99-00 Jersey Autos, 97 Court Commemerative, 97 Season Tickets, 97-98 SOTT etc...

In addition to these being scarce, these cards also hold historical significance as they are the first relic / auto cards introduced to the hobby of the GOAT which only increases its appeal to collectors

I think his CAMP auto will always hold value, but the ones I mentioned from the late 90s will likely continue to rise as there arent any more of them being made, while CAMP autos can be obtained on ANY card at ANY given time....

So yes I think his "Vintage" auto cards will continue to remain the most sought after as they remain limited unlike his CAMP autos

The lack of Jordan Autos available on the market today (due to Pannini) is another force that will also push the values of his original playing days autos (which I still feel have plenty of upside) as there are fewer and fewer of these available for sale every year with most getting locked up in MJ PCs....

The pop numbers on his playing days autos is very low. Given low supply and high demand, it is likely prices will continue to rise on the ORIGINALS as it usually does in most collectibles

Side question: Isnt the Flight School like 20K to attend for the weekend? I know it was 15 back in like 2010 or thereabouts because I was finally old enough to attend but of course couldn't spend that kind of $!!! Anyway, if you that have amount of $, and can attend camp, wouldn't you get that auto for yourself? Why are they being sold off for a few K's, which in theory should be short $ for these folks. What am I missing?

Default FLIGHT SCHOOL

I believe it's like 2000-2500 bucks for the camp. I think he signs everything alone and you don't get to see him sign them if I heard correctly.

Yes, any original 90's Jordan autos are indeed some of the most sought after in the industry. Mine happens to be a high grade star RC w the vintage (80's) auto, not acquired from a flight school. (The card was signed before there was such a school) and thus one of the few star RC's (101) with the auto that does not contain the surface damaging sticker.

Ah. I'm thinking of the senior flight school that he would hold in Vegas. It was 15 K at one point.
