I picture this.
Each city of 50K plus will have an Amazon distribution center. Delivery to your door will come from them. |

We are living in the new gilded age. Also see Ma Bell. It has happened before and will happen again. We should hope this will happen. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

Because they have too much power. Large accumulations of power never go well for society/economy. They have too much bargaining power with suppliers (often times small companies) and depress wages. Consumers have no bargaining power, either, as there is no other option. Bad for workers, bad for consumers. Competition is the life blood of our economy.
Money and power are inherently corrupting influences. The whole trick of our system is to foster competition and growth but make sure it doesn't get too out of control. The lesson of history is that when companies get too big, they need to be broken up. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

Plus, unlike Walmart who was supposed to also be broken up they put their money back into developing new things and furthering their products as well as doing work for the government. Depress wages? Had a family member work at a regional Amazon their wages were not depressed. In addition have friends working white collar corporate jobs for them. They are very well compensated and blow their competitors out of the water on that front. There are lots of other options on every single front that Amazon serves. Lesson of history is no such thing. Dell, Microsoft, Sears, Oracle, Warner Bros, Boeing all companies predicted too big and should be broken up.

Wal-Mart put thousands Mom and Pop stores out of business. Now, Amazon is going to put a hurt on them.

I don't know about depressing wages and the buying side, but I'd agree competition is important. I'm not a big fan of all the buyouts and mergers. The less competition, the easier it is to raise prices ala the medical industry for one.

Walmart is still just limited to retail and it was the backlash that limited their growth. The depressed wages happen at the supplier level. Farmers have to meet their demands or they will go somewhere else. Less money for farmers means less money for workers. Amazon may pay their people well, but they now control the book market, are making a move on the music/video market, they also control a major media outlet (Washington post) and potentially a major food retailer (Whole Foods). Bezos has made statements that show the breadth of his aspirations (limiting content to only prime customers- having two prices for prime and non prime customers). Their business model is to have you pay monthly for the privilege of accessing their products. Those products could be the food you eat, the news you read, the books you buy, the music you listen too The videos you watch. I see a backlash growing and think history would suggest that an inevitable reckoning is coming. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
