Default What am I missing (PSA related)

I recently had some cards graded and I was pretty disappointed with the results over, but my biggest surprise was the card I thought was the best came back a 3? I have attached scans, what did I now see here that PSA did. I wasn't expecting a 10, but a 3 seems way off, thanks.

In my experience situations like this can be traced to one of two things.

1st is a surface issue. Roller mark small dent, ding, or crease. I've sent a few cards in with them and all have been caught. They never can be seen in scans but most often can only be seen in hand with a raking light.

2nd is what is refered to as a "mech" error. It's when a card is graded one thing but the label ends up being printed as another. Like graded 8 entered 3. But it also happens the other way as well. The graders don't do the encapsulating so it occasionally happens. There was one card that was posted back in April on the CU forum and it was a card that received a 10 if I recall properly but was actually like a 4. It was sandwiched in between other high grade cards on the sub and was just entered in error.

With yours in particular card did you request no qualifiers? If so, not sure if the right shoulder is dust on your scanner or small snow like print dots. That could have dropped it. But I'm reaching.

That does not look like a 3 to me. A 3 you think would be pretty noticeable.

Sorry if this ends up a double post.

Most of the time you see correct. But take a look at two cards here that I subbed. 4 razor sharp corners, perfect edges, spot on centering but......

Scans don't always show flaws. See if you can spot them. I'll post them tomorrow night.

Kevin

This does not appear to be a 4 either. It is a self sub

Probably a surface wrinkle you missed, it happens.

I see something but what is the flaw?

It's a indentation. Since it's a box bottom they are very prone to surface issues. Most will have light to heavy surface scratching as well.

On that football card I'd expect minimum 8.5 but I'd want a 9

I have found PSA to be a little inconsistent with surface flaws like that. I am not sure if some of the dents and scratches have occurred after grading and before encapsulation but I have seen some 9's and 10's with either scratches, dents, dimples, or indentations.

My Tom Seaver RC came back a PSA 3 and I thought it was a nice 6 or even 7. Upon inspecting closer there was a small surface wrinkle on that card which garnered its grade. Is what it is!

Not saying psa is right on this one but i've seen and subbed card like this and realized upon further inspection that there is a slight wrinkle crease that I missed, in my opinion that is probably what happened with this card.... so by technical definition it is vg and it doesn't matter all the other nm-mt qualites jmo

Agreed. And welcome.

Sometimes you have to keep trying! I had a beautiful 1971T Nolan Ryan that came back a PSA 6. This card was mint in every way so I cracked and sent again and got a min-size requirement. Finally sent in a 3rd time and got the PSA 9 that it deserved.

Grader must have finally got laid. PSA does stand for "Please Submit Again" at times. This is the unfortunate human part of all grading. I believe other outside factors play a roll as well - turnaround time of submission, other cards graded at the same time (brand and condition), time of day it was graded, etc. It is a good feeling being proven right in the end though when the grade comes back like it should.
