Default Why does someone like Derek Jeter still sign baseball cards?

Can the money be that good? Just from the Yankees, and not including Nike, he grossed $260 million during his career.

I'm not complaining, I'm just genuinely curious.

I understand that signing products means he's essentially making money while watching TV or just hanging out but from a financial perspective, Topps would have to pay an amount of money that is more valuable to him than the money he would create with that time spent on his business and charity ventures.

Maybe it's worthwhile to keep his name in the public to keep his brand elevated?

Maybe I'm grossly underestimating how much Topps pays someone like Derek Jeter?

Perhaps because not everything is about money?

Many multimillionaires have this view: At some point, it becomes a measuring standard and how much you can accumulate can become your legacy.

So money is money, no matter what much you have in the bank, it still matters and the goal is to make as much as you can, regardless of whether you have 200million in the bank or not. Does that make sense to you? $5,000 is $5,000 even if it seems small to a multimillionaire.

He's old enough to come from a generation where giving someone his auto whether it be signing cards or a ball for a kid somewhere means something. Look at his auto. It still looks good after all these years. He could easily just go with "DJ" but he hasn't. Same for Griffey. He doesn't need the money either but his auto still still looks great. Older guys, older values.

When you become rich, there is no such thing as too much money. That is, unless you are Bill Gates/Warren Buffet territory. Then you can't even spend it all.

I'm sure he's compensated enough for his time and it's a good investment for him as a personal brand. He'll be selling Derek Jeter for the rest of his life.

The overall deal amount was probably worth his time since Topps definitely wanted to pony up to get him on cards for first time in forever.

The real question is whether he'll re-up the deal once it's done -- or whether this time is it.

I'm sure it's enough to be somewhat worth his time, even if he put all the Topps money straight to his charity. Money is money, and if you can make money by signing your name you should take advantage of it!

He's also retired, what else does he have to do lol. Scribble your name for a few hours once every 6 months and getting paid for it seems like a sweet part time gig.

I'm sure he gets paid really well to do them. Plus I don't think he does many public signings. I'm sure it would be a mad house if he did. So he gets paid and can sign from the comfort of his own home. Not a bad gig.

Besides what was already said, don't forget he has his own Charity (Turn 2 Foundation) and also donates to others as well. I'm sure a part of money from signings goes to Charities and Donations.

Of course it is about money. Think about it, how long does it take to sign his name a few hundred times? 4 hours? 8 hours? So if they are paying him 200K for maybe two days of work a year, why wouldn't he do it?

I'm actually going to agree with all of this.

He doesn't need the money.

Without knowing Jeter or Jr, I strongly doubt they are doing it because of their "values". They are still getting paid.

If it weren't about the money, then he'd do it for free.

Right, if it was about his "values" he would just sign a few dozen and be done with it, no need to sign as many as he does.
