Nice article in Baseball America about the possibility of expansion. AL and NL would disappear, the season would be shortened to 156 games and new teams would be placed in Montreal and Portland and the divisions would be change to this;
East: Atlanta, Baltimore, Cincinnati, Miami, Philadelphia, Pittsburgh, Tampa Bay and Washington. North: Boston, Cleveland, Detroit, Minnesota, Montreal, both New York franchises and Toronto. Midwest: Both Chicago franchises, Colorado, Houston, Kansas City, Milwaukee, St. Louis and Texas. West: Anaheim, Arizona, Los Angeles, Oakland, Portland, San Diego, San Francisco and Seattle. Less travel and teams would stay more within their time zones. The 4 division winners would go into the DS and 8 teams would go into WC play-in games. http://www.baseballamerica.com/colum...TGaO6eorCOr.97

12 playoff teams? I don't like it. I also don't like Detroit and Chicago not being in the same division or all the other natural rivalries being watered down or destroyed. I guess the big question is, DH across the board then?

Forget the regular season, just have the playoffs if that is the case.

You do realize that Detroit and Chicago weren't in the same division from 1969 to 1993 right? Edit; Actually Detroit didn't move to the Central until 1998. 1993 Standings American League East Toronto Blue Jays New York Yankees Baltimore Orioles Detroit Tigers Boston Red Sox Cleveland Indians Milwaukee Brewers American League West Chicago White Sox Texas Rangers Kansas City Royals Seattle Mariners California Angels Minnesota Twins Oakland A's National League East Philadelphia Phillies Montreal Expos St. Louis Cardinals Chicago Cubs Pittsburgh Pirates Florida Marlins New York Mets National League West Atlanta Braves San Francisco Giants Houston Astros Los Angeles Dodgers Cincinnati Reds Colorado Rockies San Diego Padres

From a Tx Ranger perspective I can tell you that Playing in the AL West is a beating. 3 of the 5 teams are 2 time zones away so I miss a lot of games when they are on the road because so many of them start at 9pm TX time.

I like it. It's different. But I would switch Portland to Vancouver. Let Canada have three teams. All three would be near the US/Canada border.
The only thing that concerns me (I didn't read the story, so don't crucify me), is the scheduling for the teams. Do the teams play every team during the season or a partial one where teams play their division, another division and a half of another - and rotate that every year, like what we have now? |

They should just get rid of divisions and just make it the top 10 teams make the playoffs and keep the playoff format the same. The breakdown of divisions is just a waste of time.
Get rid of the DH and make the pitcher hit for all teams

I think division are pretty important to lighten the travel load on players a bit.

I am in favor of a plan like this.
Montreal needs a team. Baseball is in the best position to expand globally. Some expansion to Tokyo, Mexico City, Puerto Rico, Montreal, Vancouver should happen in the next 20 years. |

I would like to see how this works as far as the balance of schedule. It could work out in the end. It is a drastic shift in a sport that covets ties to history and comparing players/teams across eras. I really don't want to see MLB (or any sport) get rid of divisions all together and just put the best records across the board and rank them for the playoffs. That would make for a really boring regular season. |

Like a dog returning to his vomit, we have to hear about baseball in Montreal again.

THIS I agree with. Pitchers don't hit in college most of the time. They never hit in the minors and then all of a sudden they are expected to take hacks against other Major League starters? I am all about tradition... but the way the pitchers are brought up these days is not very conducive to their success.

![]() This would totally ruin the game of baseball and I would never watch again. There would also be no reason to collect memorabilia or baseball cards. |

Not really sure Portland can support a MLB team given they don't even have a full season milb team currently. I always thought North Carolina or NY/NJ metro area would be a better market for expansion.

So assuming each team loses 3 home games I cannot see the Red Sox endorsing a $6 million loss in ticket sales and probably another 1.2 million in other sales for those 3 games

I'm already sick enough that they dumped the Astros into the AL after 50 years (success doesn't change that for me), but getting rid of the leagues entirely? Forget it. Then again, I don't really follow sports anymore, so I suppose it doesn't matter.
