Default PC people: what are "the" cards of your guy?

As a Jose Canseco collector, I think I'm in an interesting position to be able to collect cards of my guy that span a few great eras of baseball cards:
- Late 80s/Early 90s junk wax
- Mid-to-late 90s popularity of chrome and refractors
- Autograph mania of the 2010s

In the relatively near future I'll be getting close to 2500 distinct cards of Jose which has allowed me to see a nice assortment of designs that belong to those eras (except from the mid/late 2000s which contain some years where there are barely any at all of Jose). Each era also seems to have produced some standout examples of "must haves" which any Canseco collector needs to have in their possession - whether it's the iconic '86 Donruss and '86 Topps rookie cards, 1993 Topps Finest Refractor, 1997 Pinnacle Certified Mirror Gold, 1998 Donruss Crusade, 1999 Precious Metal Gem, or any of the newer low numbered autos which might also contain some great throwback patches.

Today I was able to finally get my hands on one of those "must haves": the 1998 Donruss Crusade Red /25. Easily one of the top 2 or 3 holy grail cards that I could only hope to say is a part of my collection. While there are some truly awesome 1/1s that are produced now with some great technological advances in card design, there's something about getting a 20 year old copy where only 25 total were made. Add on to the fact that the Crusade variations are so well-known in the industry and you get a really great card.

It only goes downhill from here (I'm kidding, I think ). But it got me to thinking about what cards other people consider to be THE cards that any player collector should have of their guy. There are probably a couple of different categories though, where sometimes it's a relatively common card (a base rookie maybe?), a tough to find 90s insert, a chrome auto variation, etc. Any 1/1 card is hard for me to say it's a "must have" for a PC, as there's only one person who can have that card. I know - it's totally subjective.

I'm especially interested in the people who PC current non-superstar players or players who are retired... Kevin Seitzer, Chris Herrman, Will Clark, Denard Span, Paul O'Neill, Dan Vogelbach and the like.

What are your PC "must haves" for your guy?

Default PC people: what are "the" cards of your guy?

If I could ever find the other 96 Mirror Gold (#22), I'd add it to these and that would make my top 10. All 90s cards, print runs from 5 to 30 (except the 97 embossed refractor, not sure of the print run on those):

For Knoblauch, the usual suspects plus this guy. Fortunately, I could hardly have picked a more affordable guy to PC. Outside of a few low-numbered inserts like Crusades, this is his top card and it can regularly be had for under $50 (was about a $30 card a few years ago but has seen a bump for some reason).

It was a buyback inserted in 1992 Score, numbered to 3000 on the back. Unattainable white whale when I was a kid, now own one plus about a dozen more of his autograph on various things :-). Funny what growing up can do for your collecting abilities :-)

Congrats again Matt and welcome to the brotherhood of the Canseco Crusade

I've always thought of these as being a nice base:

Topps Cloth, Blue Chips, Aqueous, Mirror Gold, Platinum Gold, Crusade Red (WOOT!)

That was just for me, anyway. I can EASILY add in several others, but for me, the list ultimately has to have at least enough copies to form a camaraderie among other collectors to put it in the spotlight - along with giving multiple people the ability to obtain it. The 88 cloth, for example. EVERYONE and their brother would LOVE to have one of them for their collection that know about them. My 88 blue? It is a one of a kind, but nobody really knows about it unless I build it up, and even so, it is unattainable, so the hype isn't there. I've always found this as weird!

I collect Frank Thomas so my list consists of a lot of stuff people have mentioned:

1990 NNOF
1992 Donruss Elite
1993 Finest Refractor
1993 Leaf Signature
Any Crusade, Legacy, PMG, Skybox Ruby, Fleer Platinum
1999 Fleer Mystique Established

There are certainly rarer cards and ones that are much more expensive, but I consider these "must have" cards so they have to be somewhat affordable (except the stupid nnof). I think compiling the above list is tough to do but not impossible and will give someone a very well rounded collection.

Thanks Magic! Any ideas what that would make prints runs? And let's see those Griffeys!

Every guess I hear seems to be in the 35-37 range. Real tough to come by.

Those Alberts are absolutely gorgeous! Love the Lance Johnson too - I'm a huge fan of seeing non-superstar collections.

And then there's Reggie's Ichiros... yowzers. Throw in some of magicpapa's Griffeys and boy oh boy.

And yes Tanner, I totally agree... while things like the blue cloth are out of this world insane, I can't say it would fall into the "must have" category where us mere mortals live
