Default J. Bench auto or classic card?

Dear collectors who know more than I. Thank you for all past advice ...quick question hopefully. I have a decent collection started ove the past several years and notice I don't have a Johnny Bench card. If I have a bout a $100 to spend...should I go for the best auto I can get or the best original braded card? As in all my cards I collect for un, but also gambling on selling it to someone when my kids grow up as a bonus {not realying on this of course} Any advice thoughts on which to look for yrs, grades, or auto's would be greatly appreciated. Thank you! Giants1964

Agree with the previous post. Vintage RC for sure. Bench is a legend for sure but he will sign and sign until he can’t sign anymore. Go with the classics.

Tough call, a graded RC is a great example to have. He also has a sharp signature in my opinion. If you have a bit more to spend, you can probably swing for both a decently graded card and an autographed card.

For $100, I'd get a PSA 8 copy of his 1969 Topps AS card (#430).

If you don't want to choose between vintage and autographed, check out Topps Archives Signature Series. They're original vintage cards signed by the player and then stamped by Topps and encased. Pretty sure I've seen them go for less than $100, but you might have to wait a bit for the right auction to come along because they're generally low-numbered.

I would go for the 1970 Topps #660 card in PSA 7 if you can't get his rookie card which goes for about 200 in PSA 7. It is his first MVP season and a high number card. It is one of the best cards of the 70s.

I was fortunate to snag this from my LCS for $35 last April. His autos are in great supply but the values just aren't there.

Personally I would go with a graded vintage RC

True, but IMHO, the 1970 Topps design is arguably the ugliest pre-90's Topps design ever. It's the only year from which I do not have a single card in my collection.

I'd buy a nice vintage.

Nice auto cards can be had for cheap.

https://www.ebay.com/itm/2007-UD-PRE...p2047675.l2557

For a nice auto, and authentic under $30 shipped.

For the rookie, you should be able to get a psa 4 nicely centered for around $100, or a nice 1969 regular or AS card.

To each his own. I hate the 69 Topps card and love the 70 Topps card. I can't stand players without hats, which the 69 set is full of. The pink backs make it even worse. The 70 Bench was the 52 Mantle of the 70s cards. It was extremely difficult and hard to find until the hobby died in the mid 90s, people quit in mass and set collecting lost its popularity. One of my favorite pulls was an autographed buyback version of the card that Topps inserted in their 2001 American Pie set. I am pretty sure it is a 1/1.

For the OP, you should be able to find a PSA 6 Bench RC for around 100 if you are patient.

Default 1969 Topps

I'm a life long Reds fan and a fan of both modern auto's of HOF'ers and vintage.

Original 1969 Topps is easily his best looking card imo. Absolute classic and first solo card.

Can probably get a PSA 6 for under $100.

Goodluck, post what you decided to get when you decide
