Default Favorite Cheap Boxes to Bust??

No not that kind...get your minds out of the gutter guys!!!

As I said in my introduction here a few days ago I have made a "mission statement" for my collection which includes condensing it vastly. In doing so I have been sticking to buying singles off my want list that fit the style of collection I am aiming for...but every once in awhile you just have to rip some wax!! And sometimes you just have to go ahead and go for it to reward yourself. When I have that feeling come on there are always my "to-go" boxes I search for on eBay...ones that I used to LOVE getting as a kid. I try to keep it in the $20-$25 range as for the most part this is just a nostalgia trip and unless I get really lucky few cards would be added to my collection. Basically it's just a $25 trip down memory lane to relive the glory days and feel like a kid again

Here is my top 10 "Favorite Cheap Boxes to Bust" List:

10. 2000 Topps Opening Day: This box certainly wouldn't be a great "investment" as there aren't any rare cards to chase but it sure does take me down a nostalgia trip. These came out when I was 13 and working part time at a candy store. Within walking distance of my job there was a K-Mart and they had '00 Topps Opening Day boxes there for $9.99. These were the small "12 packs plus 2 bonus pack!" boxes but at the end of the day I'm getting 14 packs of cards for $0.71 a piece. When I bought my first box I didn't know what to expect but figured due to the price and being a Topps product (they were always among my least favorite brands) it would be a dud. But for ten bucks it's worth a try and the fun to bust a box. To my surprise these cards were very nice looking and appealing to the eye! The set must of been condensed because majority of the cards in each pack were of high quality stars. They also had some really cool subsets and you'd get at least one or more of those per pack. For a box under 10 bucks I was getting at least half a dozen cards each of Griffey, Bonds, Thomas, McGwire and all the other big names. I used to buy a box a week!

9. 1994 Upper Deck: When these came out I was 8 years old and the first pack I bought I got a Ken Griffey Jr. "Future is Now" subset electric diamond card. Oh my goodness is was beautiful and all of my friends wanted to trade for it. I refused and refused until my buddy gave me an offer I couldn't refuse: over double book value on a trade - it had a $9BV at the time and he offered me a lot of Indians cards that totaled $20BV. I pulled the trigger on the trade and even though I loved my Tribe I instantly regretted it and spent forever (with no luck) trying to acquire it back in a trade. I finally after what seemed like buying a million packs pulled another one! It only took months worth of allowance but I had another one! I put that baby in a screw down case and it was the centerpiece of my collection. To this day I'll still buy a box of '94 UD if the price is right - not only is it a fun trip down memory lane but it's fun to chase Electric Diamond RC's of A-Rod & Michael Jordan.

8. 1996 Ultra: I always thought this particular set outside of Donruss products had the best inserts. These inserts seem to be underrated to me as well - if you want a "Call to the Hall" or "Respect" insert of your favorite player you can get one on eBay for a buck or two. Call to the Hall for me is the cleanest looking cartoon/drawling/portrait type card I've ever seen - even ahead of Donruss Diamond Kings. There are also the tougher inserts to pull in Hitting Machines and Golden Prospects and then of course every insert has the "Golden Medallion" chase as well. A GM Hitting Machine is a thing of beauty!

7. 1995 Studio: Like Topps Opening Day this set has no "chase" cards but my goodness I remember like it was yesterday when these hit the shelves. A card that looks like a credit card...how cool! Every pack had a Gold credit card and every ten packs a Platinum. I remember hitting my first platinum and it was of my favorite player Albert Belle! With a small checklist this is a fun eye appealing set to put together and they usually they are found for under $15.

6. 1995 Collector's Choice SE: Collector's Choice to me always felt like the "cheapest" quality product out. The 1994 set was a fun box to get just to chase the Gold Signature but with such a high checklist 95% of the time you were going to get a dud. When '95 CC came out I was not the least bit impressed and I'd only buy a pack of it if the grocery store didn't have anything else in stock or if it was the only pack in the budget for my 9 year old allowance. Then Collector's Choice came out with "SE" and it blew my mind. The Blue border, higher quality gloss over the card, the foil in the SE logo...man this set was a thing of beauty. The gold signature was the best version in Collector's Choice history in my opinion...and a condensed checklist also meant you had a much better shot at hitting a Griffey, Ripken or other big name star. I got a box of this last year for under $15 and hit on an Eddie Murray gold signature which proudly sits in my Indians PC.

5. 1994 Fun Pack: To this day I don't know what it is I love about these cards so much but man I love this set. The subsets were always so cool to me. Out of my group of friends I was the only one that liked to collect Fun Pack. Each box had 48 packs and with the high number of subsets and small checklist every other card in the pack was going to be an all-star. And they looked so friggin cool. There is also the Michael Jordan RC that is my personal favorite of his baseball cards.

4. 1999/2000 Upper Deck Power Deck: So yeah these were really cool! Again like Fun Pack - I was really the only one of my friends that really got into these. To me they are unique...they've never been done before or after this two year run. The "inserts" especially in the 2000 set are really cool. I am a fan of odd-ball stuff and always jump at the chance to buy a box of these when I see one in my price range. Can never have enough Power Deck CD's!

3. 1998 Donruss: Admittedly these don't come up for sale too terribly often and more times then most they can run over $25. But I have found a few in my price range over the past few years. '98 Donruss in my opinion is home to the greatest insert set of all-time in the Crusade cards. I just know in my heart every time I get a box of '98 Donruss in the mail that it is going to have a Red Griffey in it! So far of course it hasn't happened - as if it did I'd be retired living in a mansion off a beach somewhere - but one of these days maybe! Even knowing you'll never pull a Crusade this box offers a shot at some other really amazing inserts - Elite, DK, FANtasy team and Production Line (which are so sexy!) If I had to pick a set that had the best inserts of all-time give me this product.

2. 1997 UD3: Everything about this product is a joy. From the box it's in, to the packs (which in themselves were little mini boxes) to the quality of the cards, to the checklist of great players and the really nice inserts - this was a hit. The boxes were $$ back in the day - only the rich kids got them for Christmas and I darn sure never got one as a kid. Best I could do was trade for a base card of Griffey and even then that was pulling teeth. This was the first box I bought as an adult when I got back into collecting. I've probably bought a dozen or more over the past few years, it's the box I buy most frequently. They can be had routinely for $20 or less and the joy of busting them makes it worth every penny.

1. 1997 Pinnacle Mint: The dream box as a kid. When this came out I wanted it so badly. I told my mom every day if she got me a box of this for Christmas she didn't have to get me anything else. Growing up in a home that was somewhere between poor and middle class I never got the boxes my friends did under the Christmas tree. I might get a box of '90 Donruss and '91 Fleer under the tree in the mid 90's if I was lucky lol. But in 1997 - in my best Jim Ross voice - by gawd King something happened!! And there was a box of 1997 Pinnacle Mint for me under the tree. Even though I had been asking for it all year I never expected it. I had never got a premium box like this before...only junk era stuff or maybe if I was lucky that year's collectors choice. I was in awe of this so much I almost didn't want to open it! But of course I did...and those coins...wow they were so cool!! I got a silver Chipper and a dufex base card of Mike Piazza that was super cool looking. I buy these boxes now when I see them come up on eBay - which is very few and far between - and it is the ultimate trip down memory lane!

So what about you guys? If you have $20 burning a hole in your pocket what are you buying and why? Also as a PSA - I like to make lists. Just giving you guys a heads up now

And one more thing...A HUGE THANK YOU to BO member ThoseBackPages - he sent me a nice gift that came in the mail today! Thank you so much you are amazing...glad there are people like you in our community!

Nice list. Some of those I was on a collecting hiatus so I like knowing if they are good or not. I do like boxes that have chase cards no matter the odds.

Great stuff

Always liked '98 Donruss as well but Pinnacle Mint is the one set I absolutely hated from the 90's... Studio was always nice too

I was the only one of my friends that was obsessed with Pinnacle Mint. Maybe the consensus was it was a dud?

1987 Topps (cuz it was my start in the collecting world)
1989 Bowman (Griffey rookie plus it was the card brand my Dad collected in the 50's and this was its comeback year)
1989 Fleer (some fun errors to chase plus Griffey rookie)

I distinctly remember a set called 2001 Upper Deck Decade 70's. Now that's a fun rip, and probably pretty inexpensive as well.

I've enjoyed the last few Donruss releases. They've been really fun to open. Lots of numbered cards.

I also loved 1992 and 1993 Classic Hockey Draft. I bought a case of 1992 for less than 10 bucks a box and pulled the Lemieux autograph.

You had me at 1987 Topps. Don't need inserts/parallels/relics/autos to have a fun time breaking open a box.

I had back surgery in January, and the docs want me to sit up during the day to help with the healing process. I asked friends for old cards I could sort at the dining room table, and a buddy whose dad used to be a big collector/dealer showed up at my place with 8 wax boxes of Topps baseball, two each from 87-90. I've been having a blast, although the wife probably wishes she could have the table back.

It's amazing how much more relaxing it is to open packs of baseball cards when you're not worried about hits. Hasn't stopped me from blowing a ton of money on Heritage this year though lol.

so true...cheap wax is fun to bust because if you don't pull anything, your not really taking a kick to the nuts because it wasn't very expensive.

1996 pinnacle aficionado can be had for under $50. This is one of my favorite sets of all time. Great player selection and some really beautiful inserts. With such a great checklist, when you pull an artists proof, there is a good chance it will be of a star or hall of famer.

I wait until Black Friday sales.
Last year, I picked all of these up in the $25/box range

2013 Leaf Perfect Game Showcase BB (12 autos per box, most of whom never accomplished anything, but some 1st autos of guys who are now top prospects).
2012, 2013, and 2014 Panini Golden Age (minimum of an auto and a relic per box, 2013 and 2014 often had extras, 2012 had randomly inserted vintage cards)
2013 Panini USA BB Champions (5 guaranteed hits per box, most had 6).

Thanks.

Quick funny story- between all that decomposing gum and the dust in general from the cards, I've had to sneeze a few times while working on this project. Sneezing right after back surgery is a very unpleasant experience haha.

I think 1987 Topps due to the sheer number of star and HOF rookies combined with the super low cost. I still have a 1987 Topps cello box I picked up years ago for $3.

When I have some downtime from collecting...probably when Topps ends A&G or Archives lines...I'll go back and start busting the 1990's Stadium club boxes and making sets. I figure that binders and 9 pockets will cost me more than the cards. The 1991 set is worthless, but has so many really nice looking cards.
