I am working on something like this but a little easier to use.

FWIW you can still buy an Omni Grid on eBay and it does the same thing.

I'd love to see a day grading companies list the exact centering specifications for each card.

T/B 51.25/48.75 & R/L 53.34/46.66

Diamond cut cards present an issue however.

Oh my gosh, this brings back memories - there was something like this out there over 25 years ago and I had one. I don't recall what it was called. Granted, this is light years ahead of what I had back then. If only I could remember the name!

There should be a way to automatically do this with an image by now.

I suppose one could make a template in Photoshop (or GiMP) and apply it as a layer to a scanned image. Would probably allow a lot greater accuracy too.

If there is an iPhone app like this, I'd be all over it, provided that the cost of the app is $5 or something.

Looking at the novelty, I bought one. I was interested in giving it a look.

The problem is getting the app to figure out which lines to use as reference points. Also, getting the app to deal with scans that are not perfectly centered isn't easy.

It's not impossible, but a lot of work/expertise in edge detection algorithms and Hough transform.

I've messed around a bit in the past with it but got over my head. I have the programming chops but not the appropriate algorithm knowledge.

What if the app simply looked at the absolute boundary of the card and then simply laid the grid template on top of it? You could even have a feature to allow the user to definite the outer boundary similar to how camscan operates.

I have a PowerPoint template that does this that I use for buying cards online. Throw the image into ppt, overlay my grid template on top, and I can immediately gauge centering.

How does your PPT template work if the card image isn't perfectly aligned?

I bought an omni grid at a quilting store and felt completely out of place, but it was a great purchase.

You can rotate images in powerpoint in 1 degree increments to get the card edges vertical/horizontal. In the odd even that 1 degree isn't granular enough, you can rotate arbitrarily in photoshop or even irfanview.

If you're talking about diamond cut cards, then it doesn't account for that...

But I think an 'augmented reality' app where it simply overlaid a grid on top of whatever you point the camera at would be a neat thing to have. You can line it up manually and then get a good idea for centering based on the overlay. It's sort of a moot point though because after looking at enough cards in my life, I can now typically peg the centering to within 5%. I think most of us can probably do that.

This is a pretty cool tool, but considering how many threads on here have been dedicated to how inaccurate grading companies 'opinions' are, how useful is this, really?

You could use it and say "oh, that's definitely 50/50 horizontally and vertically", and your centering grade comes back an 8.5.

Again, a useful tool as a general guide, but it's still your opinion versus the grader's opinion. Has anyone who uses an omni grid had better success when submitting cards based on their evaluation using one?

It's simple. Just show Beckett a picture of the card with the grade master centering tool and I'm sure they will no doubt realize their mistake and remedy the grade in the card owner's favor. DUH

Of course, I am giggling as I typed that out.

I bought one and it is okay - sometimes have trouble seeing some borders through the tool and a ruler would get the job done just as well or better.

Has anyone used this tool and received a 10 from either BGS or PSA?
