Default The “Wow I can’t believe they put that duo/trio on a card” Thread

I believe there was a thread like this a while ago but I can’t remember what it was called.

Anyway, I’ve been seeing a few of these cards recently where the duo/trio is odd to say the least, at least looking back on it. At the time, they probably made sense but in 2018, they definitely don’t make any sense whatsoever, i.e. a Brett Favre/Aaron Brooks dual auto.

The one that immediately made me start chuckling a little bit was this card:

One of the greatest defensive players of all-time and..... Chuck Bednarik? Looking back on it, this card makes no sense to pair Bednarik with Maybin but hindsight is 20/20.

So, what cards have you seen that make you think, “Jesus, what kind of acid was (insert company) on when they made this card?”

Justin Blackmon/Barry Sanders dual auto from SPx. Was a decent sounding card in2012, now you only want half of the card in 2018.

Here’s another one, although it isn’t too bad. Made a whole lot of sense when it was made but now... the Sanchez part can be scrapped.

The question is not "I can’t believe they put that" but rather "Looking back, what combos are NOW foolish"

Every card listed (almost) I can absolutely see why they were made. Paring a rookie with a Vet and matching teams (Pro or College) has always been a cool idea. Until one of them sucks. But hindsight is 20-20...

Past and future at the same position. Or subsets that feature starting players from rival teams. Or even pairing rookies from the Premiere together. Make no mistake, they are NOT still making Kevin Smith & Barry Sanders cards. Most of these failures came out rookie years. And since the hobby chases the Next Big Thing, pairing rookies with legends has always been a selling point when pushing product.

What would a Terry Bradshaw Big Ben dual signed RC go for? Favre / Rodgers. ETC

Bednarrick/Maybin = Both Pennsylvania LB's drafted in the 1st round
Kevin Jones/Barry Sander = Both Lions RB's drafted in the 1st round
Drew Henson/Tom Brad = Michigan starting QB's
Vernand Morency/ Barry Sanders = Oklahoma State RB's
Justin Blackmon/ Barry Sanders = Oklahoma State 1st rounders
Joe Namath/ Mark Sanchez = Jets 1st round QB's
Jim Brown/ Montario Hardesty = Browns RB's
Steve Young Cade McNown = NFC starting QB's
Doug Flutie / Akili Smith = AFC starting QB's
Aaron Rodgers/Brian Brohm = Packers QB's

Hulk Hogan/ Troy Aikman = the only card, so far, that should be on this list. I got nothing here but the commercial tie in that was posted.

There was a thread on here a while back that discussed this topic but strictly required that cards make no sense at the time of release. It might have been in baseball, but I agree with Grid above, most of these made sense at the time of release. I liked that thread a lot better.
