Default Joe Montana 1981 Topps RC

Hey guys, Just looking for some thoughts on the 1981 Joe Montana Topps Rookie. Do you guys think these are undervalued/overvalued at current market prices? I really wanna purchase either a BGS/PSA 8 or 9 for the PC.

Is now a good time to grab one of these or do you think they will drop in value or go up in the near future?

I value and appreciate everyone's input. Thanks in advance for any thoughts on this one.

He seems really cheap since the advent of Brees, Brady etc....I'm not sure he will go up because of all the QBs out there that will have better stats...he seems to be getting pushed down alot of lists.....certainly a legend, though, and one of the greatest QBs of all time, so go get one.

I honestly think Brady has hurt his value

If you’re looking for a graded RC, this is a pretty good time to buy, compared to the last few years. eBay has been saturated with them more than in recent memory. If you look you can probably get a BGS 8 for $100 or so a PSA 8 will run you closer to $135-$150. A year ago a PSA would cost $150 minimum. A PSA 9 can likely be found near $500 if you’re lucky, which is at least $100 less than they were last year.
His raw RCs are obviously based on condition. The raw cards that are in amazing shape (potential high 8s and 9s) are going for big bucks. With the amount of mint-ish raw cards dwindling rapidly, it appears people are willing to over pay right now. I know I’m guilty of it. With all the risks of trimming and recoloring that exist with that card, I would buy a nice looking 8 and hope for the best.

I'd grab one now, it's really a must have card. I think I snagged this card last year.

yeah, i guess its a little too OC to be a 9, but those corners and edges look razor sharp during a time where razor sharp was rare.

nice card!

That is a great looking 8 Montana. The back definitely knocked it down, but the front eye appeal is beautiful.

I got a PSA 9. I way overpaid for it based on today’s prices. I assume they were being falsely hyped when I bought. But it’s the one card I wanted when I started collecting. If I could only choose one card in my collection, this would be it.

They are a good buy right now. Nicely centered PSA8 or 9 like Wilson's posted above is the way to go.

Thanks for the input guys. I think I'm gonna grab a PSA 8 and try and find a beauty like Wilson's. These do seem reasonably priced right now like others have mentioned, haven't really followed what these have gone for years prior but if I can find a nice centered psa 8 for around or below $150 I'll be happy.

I have a PSA 9 and overpaid at the time. But I love the card and it's an essential piece of my PC.

Ya I agree. This is an essential card for the PC. Been collecting for over 25 years and I can't understand why I am just adding one now after all these years lol.. I really do believe its cards like these that will stand the test of time and to me what make collecting cards great.

And the card looks so much better in the psa holder as well with the red/white label.. great 49ers eye appeal. Can't wait to get one in hand

Very strong PSA 8

Also, don't forget about the 1982 version which is one of my favorite Montana cards........looks amazing next to the 1981 card.
