Default Falcons refuse to give Julio Jones a new deal

Awesome move.. lots of respect gained for the Falcons' higher ups. I'm a Tide fan but enough is enough.

And if he got a new deal he'd want another one 2 years from now.

I mean the guy signed a 5 year extension, 2 years ago. Shut the hell up and play for your $14M a year.

Edit: How pissed must Aaron Donald be with the B cooks $80M extension yesterday?? I have a feeling this will be his last year in LA regardless of what they end up offering.

That’s right Julio, zip it and play. Agreed

Also agree about AD. New guy gets a nice deal and they can’t get him signed.

And they likely won't either. He's gotta be totally bent, and I don't blame him at all.

Is he asking for too much? He seems worth it to me. He’s been a stud.

Not sure exactly what he's been asking for but he's been asking for an extension on his rookie deal (that's he's been outperforming handily) for a few years. Then cooks comes in and gets $80M in 3 months without playing a down as a Ram.

Whatever he wants, they should have gave to him, not a one trick pony go route WR. He is the best interior D lineman in the league. Those guys are incredibly important to a good pass rush too. Rodgers said something along the lines of "edge rush isn't a problem, I can see that coming and evade it. It's a problem when the pocket collapses in your face, there's nothing you can do then" which makes total sense. Also, when you have a guy of his caliber on DLine it frees up one other defender every single play. I have a feeling the Rams choked it on this one.

I'll gladly take him in GB when he leaves next year !!

Hopefully he goes to SF and sticks it to LA. Best way to get them back is play them twice a year like Sherman decided to do.

Donald wont' leave LA. He's playing 5th year option this year so he will be tagged at least twice if needed.

Also rumor that Donald is asking for 20 million a year.

I will use the same argument as everyone in this situation - if a player under contract does poorly should the team be able to renegotiate a lower contract?

I get so tired of players doing this. If you want to be able to renegotiate salary every year, sign 1 year contracts and get paid based on how you played last year. Players love the safety of a multi-year contract if they play poorly then bitch they aren't making enough if they play lights out.

Short of it is that the owners are spoiled rich kids and the players are spoiled rich kids who both make WAY to much money for their participation in a game.

Donald wants 20mm/yr. That is top qb $. No team can afford that as doing so would completely debilitate the rest of the roster.

He may be the best defender in the game and deserves a big contract, which I know the Rams want to give him, but his current ask is simply unreasonable.

Rams just paid Cooks 5 years 80 million. Gurley and Goff both will probably be looking to extend themselves after this season. Probably can't pay everyone. If Donald wants 20 million Goff will be wanting 25-30+ in a year or tow Gurley will be wanting 10+ what do you do have 75-80 million of cap space going to 4 players?

It's all part of the delicate act of balancing the salary cap when you have too many good players. Seattle went through it. You've basically got a 4-6 year window to win a super bowl while the talented group of players are still on their rookie contracts.

Lions had this problem a few years ago - Suh, Stafford, and Calvin were taking up like 40%+ of the total cap. Hard to fill a roster this way.

Exactly. When you've got to divide the remaining 60% among 50 other players you get pretty thin at certain positions.

Right now Packers this year have like 7 guys accounting for almost 50% of their cap space $85 million tied into them. Have 26 guys in their top 51 contracts that count towards cap that make under $1 million.

How will Rodgers new deal impact that?

All depends if it's one of those deals were the cap number goes down year one. If it goes up my guess Bryan Bulaga could be on chopping block he would save 6.3 million by being released.

Pull a Bobby Bonilla and defer payments over the next 20 years with interest. If you've got enough money now might as well set yourself up for the rest of your life. A lot of athletes can't manage money after retirement and file for bankruptcy within 5 years. Rodgers could probably get like 300 million over 20 years.

Packers are a team that does not like giving out deferred money. Besides Rodgers a team that does not like giving out guaranteed money after year 2 at most in a deal.

If most these players had any IQ they would hire a pro money person who knows how to invest and not uncle sid because he promised to double their money. The accountant gives them x amount of money to spend each week while investing the rest. Or if they are big enough name do like Gronk put his NFL salary in the bank and live off his endorsment's.
