Default 1997-98 Ultra Star Power Supreme fading?

Got a star power plus in my PC but hope to upgrade to a supreme. Most of the copies I can see on Ebay seem to look faded. Does anyone know if this is a common issue or do they just photograph that way due to being acetate? Thanks.

They do fade. They also have etching that comes off as well.

Anybody know if the high grade copies deteriorate even after being slabbed?

I wouldn't think so, but I had one damaged in the process of being slabbed. Some of the foil flaked off or got pulled off when I got the case back. It was slabbed a PSA 9 still. They claimed it got damaged in the case and paid me for it, but I think it was done beforehand or in the slabbing process. You'll see a lot of high-graded copies with foil missing. I may be wrong but I don't think the graders count it against the surface.

If I had a clean raw copy, I would not get it slabbed after that experience.

I made a thread on these a while back. They're really hit or miss with the foil, even in high grade like someone else said.

I’ve owned 4 different 96-97 pink MJ court masters in 9.5 and 3/4 had flaking where you could see pieces of the basketball floating in the case. I think it has to be that it happens during slabbing. I finally found one that was intact. I also had that issue on a metal titanium acetate 9.5 MJ.

Star power supreme sometimes look like they are faded but they aren't, there's a fine line between how they should look and one "starting" to fade...it helps to know what they "should" look like in person before going after one for your PC.

The best tell if one is starting to fade is on the body of the player, it stands out there first, however they all sort of have a greenish hue, it's the degradation of color saturation on the player that starts to go...

I have owned most of the BGS 9.5's of that card and they all varied, pretty much impossible to find one perfect...but there are a few that are graded and look good enough for the grade.

The ones that have "started" to fade don't really get much worse over time if protected, this is very strange because all most every other 90's insert made with the same tech continues to fade once the process starts..

They can. I used to have a scan of a peeling supreme acetate of MJ. I cant find it, but it was a BGS 9.5. The peeling must have happen post grade.

I was actually going to start a thread on this exact topic. I even took a scan to show the difference in color fading.

As most/all 90s cards, red inks and white inks seem to fade first... The top three cards are faded. The bottom four are not. It's most noticeable when comparing the two Walkers.

In my experience, they only get messed up when they're placed inside a soft sleeve. So all BGS cases and some PSA cases (depending on whether it includes a sleeve) can cause the rainbow foil to peel off. The foil gets stuck to the soft sleeve and then when the card shifts, the card moves but the foil stays stuck to the sleeve.

Thanks for all the great responses guys. It's a shame as they're really nice inserts but I might just stick with what I've got:

Good call. The Jordan card is one of the toughest in the set. His jersey is basically all red and white, so it has a tendency to fade more than the other cards in the set. Probably the hardest one to find without fading except for maybe Van Horn...

While we are on the topic, can we put together a list of Fleer/SkyBox that experience fading/surface issues as they continue to age?

Anyone ever experience any issues with their lenticular cards?

Yeah you'll see this on numerous copies of this card. They need to change the way they slab these. I do have 1 clean PSA 10, but it's without the inner sleeve.

Put white cardboard behind it. Especially if displaying.

Yep. The seller is well known for buying uncut sheets and backdoor cards and then reselling.

I'm also worried about how to store my copy of this card:

I had it in a One Touch, but then with the humidity here I was worried about it sticking to the front. I swapped it into a penny sleeve and top loader but now I'm worried because someone mentioned the sleeve causes the issue :O. Should I put it in a One Touch that is too big for the card just to make sure it doesn't stick?

Thanks for the heads up. Your KG looks to be holding up in pretty good shape so far.
