Default Is Philip Rivers a Hall of Famer; revisiting the topic

There was a thread on this in 2015, just wanted to revisit the topic a few years later with some updated stats/info

rivers has 353 td passes, which is currently 6th in nfl history... it's safe to say he is likely to finish the year with 375 (marino is 5th at 420)

rivers has slightly over 51k yards passing, which is 8th in nfl history.... ben and eli are within 1000 yards, 5th is marino at 61k

rivers has a completion percentage of 64.3, which is currently 9th in nfl history

rivers has a career qb rating of 95.2, which is 8th best in nfl history

rivers has 112 career wins, which is 13th all time....... next retired guy up is bradshaw at 120

*** rivers has 12 black ink categories for his career
*** rivers has a td to int ratio of better than 2:1
*** rivers is a 7 time pro bowler
*** rivers is 4-5 in the playoffs

i feel like rivers is a hall of famer and will go in on either his 1st, 2nd, or 3rd ballot........ depending on how he finishes up his career, what say you?

Just think where his stats would be if he didn't have to sit the first 2 years.

i thought rivers throwing motion in college was laughable.... i thought he wouldn't be any good in the nfl...... yet he is very accurate and ultimately can be counted on to perform at a high level. he has done this for nearly 15 years and i think he should get some appreciation

6th in td passes
8th in yards
borderline top 10 in wins
9th completion percentage
8th in qb rating

great reputation among players and writers..... some holes in the resume but overall it's better than good enough

Couple of guys will drop by and tell you no. A 49er guy and maybe a marino fan. But I'm ok with him getting in.

no super bowl appearances (while playing on a few great teams), never a first team all pro, never a league mvp

however... the objective is to win games and you do that by scoring points..... in the history of the league he is borderline top 10 in wins.... and he is 6th in td passes

if a franchise thinks you are the face for nearly 15 years, and you win a ton of games and throw that many td passes...... you are likely a hall of famer

I think he does get in although it might take a decade or so of being on the ballot.
I feel that him having two incredible HOF offensive weapons in LaDainian Tomlinson and Antonio Gates gets in his way because they were better at their respective positions than Rivers was.

Yeah, I'd say probably.

His numbers will only go up as I doubt he retires anytime real soon.

Now winning any awards or championships, that's questionable.

His numbers are hollow in terms of advancement of the team(playoff and SB wise) but when all is said and done he's a slam dunk. I wouldn't put him in but he's going in. There's no doubt.

yes, as stated before. He is the Frank Gore of QBs. Never in the top 5 at his position, no mvps, post season success, etc..

Raw stats will get him in just like Gore.

i agree in full....... fouts would have been my true comparison but fouts was a 2 time first team all pro

i think river's stats will hold weight because he will end up in the top 10 in qb wins......... then when you say, ok he's won so many games; and then the stats are overwhelming. i think he gets the nod pretty quick

also*** he will be the first major stat guy to be on the block.... and i think the numbers will be so overwhelming the voters won't have a choice; moving forward in the next 10-15 years these numbers won't be anywhere near as impressive and won't come with 125 plus career wins... so i think rivers will benefit from being the first guy up with this type of argument

he has led the league in td passes, he has led the league in yards,he has led the league in efficiency rating, he has led the league completion percentage, and yards per attempt at different times through his career

gore never led in anything, ever... that's my gripe with him

as a stat compiler, i think rivers is astronomically more complete in what he has done at qb when compared to gore at rb

but you are right, the lack of all pro teams or a winning playoff record are a stain.... maybe he can have a nice run to the super bowl before it's all said and done

I agree. He’s getting in, whether people like it or not. That said, he’s a HOF’er. Oddly enough, there are some parallels to another former Chargers quarterback who is in Canton. Fouts had a 3-4 postseason record, but had remarkable regular season numbers, playing for offense heavy teams.

He needs a ring.

I have lived in San Diego his whole career and watched most of his games. He is not at the same level as the Hall of Fame QBs I have seen.

He was a stat compiler on a lot of mediocre Charger teams more than anything. Can't seem to win the big game which QBs for the most part need on their resume.

The Fouts comparison is good which means the argument could be made he should be in but I am still a no.

It would be interesting to see if he did get in what his Win% (not Wins) is compared to other Hall of Famers. My guess it would be at the bottom of the list.

Having said that he probably will get in.

he'll probably get in at some point just because of the numbers he's amassed. is he an elite level quarterback? nope.

Fouts was a first-ballot Hall of Famer.

For some reason I was thinking of Don Coryell and how he hasn't been elected to the Hall.

If he gets in, then half the qbs playing in the league right now will end up being HOFs.
