I’m wondering what bad habits are you trying to stop as a collector?
I have a very bad habit of being impatient and sometimes overpaying for cards I really want for my PC. When Juan Soto’s 2018 Topps Update cards released, I wanted them all immediately. When I saw the SP, I was one of the first to buy it on eBay.. then when I saw there was an SSP available, I thought they were going to be extremely limited, so I bought one of the first ones on eBay. Let’s just say, a month later, I knew I overpaid for them all BY A LOT! I kept telling myself to wait during the off-season, but I just couldn’t do it. When I see rare cards of my other PC players (Trout & Ichiro), I find myself overpaying for them too. Anyone else want to share their bad habits? Sorry it’s unfortunately a sad topic for some of us. ![]()

Needing every single 1/1 even if they are ugly and have no eye appeal but they say 1/1

The big one for me is reactionary buying. "Oh, Player X on my team is having a great year, I should buy some of his cards" ...........at the same time that everyone else is, while prices are inflated instead of waiting a few weeks and probably being able to get them much cheaper when people stop caring about a Twins player that's having a decent season
I've gotten much better at this second one, actually almost perfect, but it'll remain a goal to not fall behind inventorying new cards when I get them in. It's SO much easier to just inventory a handful of cards when they come in instead of letting stacks of hundreds pile up. The website I've been building has been a huge help for this, having a nice tool to easily record things is so nice

Opening cards and leaving them sitting on the dining room table for weeks before completely sorting and filing away into boxes.

These are my big 3. I recently tallied some of my "small" purchases for the year and was sick with the total amount spent. Could have bought a few AMAZING items I loved for the same prices vs. having a bunch of smaller ones I just like (but don't love). This is my goal for 2019. Additionally, I don't inventory cards right when I receive them. I let them pile up and pile up and pile up. Then all of a sudden I have 1000s of cards that need to be put away and I'm overwhelmed... sigh... |

Saying no to Craigslist hoards!
Saying no to case breaking. Lack of organization. |

Buying boxes of Museum or TTT... So fun to open but rarely keep anything and end up taking a big loss.

Buying too much Opening Day when I buy groceries just because the idea of the kids theme to the inserts makes me like those inserts best. And buying too much S1, S2 & Update brand new when I buy groceries instead of buying it when it is a year or two old and then discounted. Look for lots and lots of Trout, Harper, and Ohtani boxes, packs, and wrappers twinkling @ you with that nifty Value Value Value sticker on them next year....still lots and lots of it in every store I go to.
That and not taking good enough care of all the "Who's That?" RC cards I pull from low end retail. Now, I have to go open an Ohtani Update Fat Pack I just bought... |

I can relate to this. How about buying five retail blasters at $20 a piece instead of buying one hobby box or maybe even two hobby boxes for what you paid? Something about the appeal of having quantity....

I like picking my teeth with superfractors. Nothing satisfies after eating corn on the cob like reaching over for an Ohtani superfractor, or whichever superfractor is nearby, removing it from the top loader and really getting in there.
That's a joke by the way. I don't really like corn on the cob. |

My problem is I just work too damn hard.
(Not) I need to be better organized, manage my time better, and stay focused with my purchases. FWIW, I've done a lot better on the purchases this year. Time and organization still elude me.

Spread.
aka, lack of focus. Similar to the small purchases issue. I'll be going for one of my players and it gets me into the issue/release and looking at other players. Soon I'm buying other players, other teams, other parallels, etc. This is how I end up with random Shooty Babitt cards/ |

Getting competitive about my collection.
Concentrating more on what I don't have rather than what I do.

Submitting cards for grading that will only earn me a couple bucks in profit, and only if they hit a PSA 10.

I’m doing that now. Once in a while I crack and buy a cheap rookie.

Not appreciating what I already have in my collection... I always seem to be looking for the "next" thing to buy.
