I really didn’t know anything about Sal Maglie, but Bouton was so brutal on him in Ball Four that I was dying laughing.

Pete Rose hated him for the book and used to yell 'F__K YOU SHAKESPEARE!" from the dugout at Bouton when he was pitching...
Hopefully some of the younger fellas here will at least look him up.... |

Great wit. I also read his book "I'm glad you didn't take it personally," which was written about his experiences with Ball Four and about him being blackballed. His most recent book I think was about bidding to get a minor league team in Pittsfield Mass. Was a pretty good read also.

I just read Ball Four again in spring training like I do every year. Guess it's time to watch The Battered B*stards of Baseball again.

R.I.P. Jim "Ball Four" Bouton.
I've been a Yankee fan since 1961 and I still remember those early 1960's when the Yanks were still great and I also recall the thin years, but those were my most enjoyable days as a Yankee fan. R.I.P. Mr. Bouton. |

He spoke at a company offsite about 10 years ago, very nice guy.
Signed for everybody that had a copy of his book and he gave everybody a pack of Big League Chew. Half the company didn't even know what it was so I made out like a bandit, ha ha |
