Default Rookie card re-issued as a buyback auto...still a RC?

I just missed this on ebay, but was thinking....is this considered a rookie card since it is the 2018 Topps Update...or not, because it was issued in 2019?

If you collect all rookie cards of one player, do you chase these too?

The card unaltered is a rookie card.

The fact that the card was stamped aftermarket as a 1/1 or whatever and is autographed, altering it’s original form and given the fact that it was pulled out of a 2019 product does not make it a true rookie card, ie, if I was a player collector I wouldn’t view it as a rookie year issue but more of as a buyback insert.

I would use the COMC term "rookie related" but maybe not "rookie year" if that makes any sense. Was issued in 2019 packs so probably not in the strictest terms. Doesn't really matter though as this is a perfect example of the old "buy what you like" credo and as an added bonus I think the value would essentially rise or fall with his RCs.

Precisely. If you pull a 1968 topps Vada Pinson 50th anniversary buyback out of a 2017 topps heritage buyback topper, sure the lipstick on the pig still makes it a pig, but no set builder would consider it an original issue, cause it has been altered from its original form.

Whatever it is, I'd rather have that card than his regular plain old rc...

No one saying it’s worthless - it’s still a very desirable card, but not an original rookie card.

It's a very cool card. It's also a 2019 autograph.

it comes down to if the term "true rookie cards" means anything to you

me personally, I wouldn't, cause I have a hockey card collecting background, and true rookie is like THE thing over there.

but one thing we can ALL agree, thats a sweet card and will fetch a nice penny

This is a tough one for me. If you took that card to a game in 2019 and asked Juan to sign it, and he did, it's still a rookie card though.

The stamp from 2019 archives is the issue here.

I just remember in a beckett article many many many moons ago, there was so much against getting a rookie card signed since it would devalue/deface the card!

How far we have come

that's a sexy soto fwiw, no idea how I'd classify it to be honest

if upper deck can still put out ben simmons rookies in 2019, then who knows

Makes me also think about Transcendent VIP cards like this... they seem to have a 1/1 every year of the same card... hilariously...

This is the 2018 one:

It was mine, and it was sweet. Very nice in hand. I want to see the Acuna too, but I don’t know if he is in this years checklist as nothing has hit eBay yet (that I’ve seen at least).

Ultimately I’m a Mets fan, so this card doesn’t mean much to me. Next year when there’s a Pete Alonso Series 2 RC buyback auto, I’m chasing it without a doubt.

It's a cool card but it's a 2019 issued card so not a RC in my opinion

This is like discussing buyback autos from bowman - the ken griffey jr buyback stamped auto - buyback implies it is a RC but altered and signed
Everyone may have their own decision on PC or not PC if collecting rookie cards - but it is unique and a beautiful card nonetheless.

To me, the actual card is a rookie card, but the auto is a 2019 autograph.
