Default Honor Among Thieves....?

I guess not.

So the wife decides to do something she never does...she bought me a Bowman Platinum blaster yesterday as part of a Happy Valentine's Day package she was giving me. Honestly, if this isn't the first time she's bought a blaster it's the second.

So she hands me the box this morning and right away my suspicions arise because it is NOT shrink-wrapped. It is "sealed" by two narrow metallic stickers on either end...and not very well at that. I look this over and immediately say to my wife that this box was returned and most-likley searched.

My suspicions were all-but confirmed when I opened the box and see seven retail packs and one pack that was from a hobby box. How did I know? Easy to spot when the retail are grey/silver and the hobby are mostly white.

So guess what was in that pack? 5 cards from 1987 Score.

My wife was stunned that it would happen and that I even knew it from the outside of the box and the pack. I was pissed that some jackass would, in essence, stoop to outright theft and leave this box to be potentially bought by a kid that might have worked his ass off for two weeks around the house to raise the money to buy this blaster. It's one thing to feel up the packs and weigh them on store floors. At least those guys are actually paying for what they are taking. This was just sickening.

We'll be back to the store she bought the blaster at to discuss things with the manager. Gotta be some accountability there about NOT accepting card boxes back that have been opened.

Gee...you think the wife is ever going to want to do something like this for me again

I had this happen once; I don't even remember what the product was (Heritage?). The thief had re-sealed the Topps cellophane, so I didn't notice something was odd until I got home. All of the packs were open, no hits, no nothing.

Target is actually really good for returns, and they took it no problem. Of course, this is probably what started the problem in the first place.

been there done that with target and walmart. It's always nice to open a NEW resealed box and find 10 year old cards in it. Its why most of the time I open in my car before I leave the parking lot for that just in case someone scammed the store situation.

This is partly why I get so nervous when my family and fiancee' consider buying cards for me.
I really, really appreciate the gesture, but I get so paranoid because they know nothing almost about the hobby and would be very easy to get ripped off. For instance, my birthday is coming up and I told my mom I wanted to get a Greg Maddux auto card for my All Star project. She said she'd buy one, and well I said I'll buy one off of eBay and you just give me a check. My fears were that she'd end up paying $100 for a non-auto card or non authentic auto.

Too many scumbags out there that want to scam/rip people off instead of being honest. Makes me sick.

I hate these situation.

Been ripped too many times with empty Metallic Tin of Hockey Cards at Wal-Mart here in Canada.

You can't tell before you open it home.

Honor among thieves would be a pack-searching telling you, another pack searcher, not to buy that pack.

Anyways, stuff like this sucks. I'm sorry to hear that. It's a pain in the butt to go back out to a store.
meh...semantics.

My purpose of the title was playing off the fact that many think packsearchers are like thieves. But at least the traditional ones pay for those packs they search. These guys search, reseal boxes, and return for refunds.

Truly amazes me how pathetic some people are. But thankfully I do have those ultra rare 1987 Scores

I agree but its nothing new. I don't know how old you are but I remember in the old days(70's and 80's) people would open the packs and then reseal them by gluing them back or even using a iron to reseal them back by melting the wax seal. It sucks but unless you get it straight from a sealed case it could be tampared with.

Too bad about the blaster. I bet the store will probably make it right for you when you bring it to their attention. Don't lose sight of the real message from your wife. Give her a hug and kiss and tell her you love her.
