Please stop me from overpaying for a card

There is a card that I almost must have. It is a /1.

It is worth ~ $500 at most.

Seller wants $1K.

In the past I have been burned by overpaying for cards past but I guess I have not learned my lesson.

How are you determining the value of a 1/1?

It’s a 1/1 so it’s hard to judge. If you really want it to keep for PC and not resell, sack up.

What can I do?
Can I send him a message acting like I want the card, but drive him crazy so he gives up and end up selling it to you for $500 instead?

Or should I stay away from all of these because every time I get involve I end up screwing things up Three Stooges style?

This is what my brain tells me. I doubt anybody will pay his asking price right now. What if he goes off the next few weeks? The price might be $2K which I will not pay.

I am a little embarrassed to say since I know this is the worst time to buy this card but since it is relevant to the discussion I will.

Question you need to ask yourself is if this seller gets what he wants from someone else are you going to be disappointed that you didnt pay up? There are plenty of stories on here where someone was trying to pay what they felt was fair value for a card only for it to get sold to someone else. I know I have paid up a couple times for something I wanted for the PC or to finish a set. Ultimately I dont care I spent the money, if I didnt then I would still be searching for years trying to find similar ones to get listed. And then I would be kicking myself for just not paying a little bit more when I could have.

On a side note that seller shouldnt be allowed to sell on ebay. Writing 'non auto' in the title is pathetic.

Your link says seller is asking $2K...did you already talk him down to $1K?

sounds like its a “must have” investment if you’re worried that much about overpaying. if it was for a lock away PC card for life.. different story!

Just wait and buy his Contenders rookie ticket auto. If he keeps playing well his rookie ticket auto will hold more value long term.
That 1/1 card will never bring what his rookie ticket auto will bring.
Now this all depends on how great he keeps playing and winning games.
He has to be the IT factor at winning big games consistently.
If not that 1 of 1 will be worth $20to $50 in the next year are so.

Listen, I LOVE Gardner Memeshew so so very much. He's already one of my favorite players of this millennium.

But he's a QB on a roster with some serious talent issues, especially if Ramsey ends up leaving. Let's say he does end up being the "Next Big Thing"—the timing here is horrible. In the short term, the Jags are playing the Broncos so he could get another boost and cause the seller to play hardball. But in the long term the Jags are still bad Vegas odds to make the playoffs. And playoff football is what usually determines QB value.

So even if he's an upcoming great, you'll want to wait until at least the playoffs start without the Jags or the offseason before going around picking up 1/1s.......unless you just have that kind of money to throw around.

Or better yet, save the money for when Prizm silvers arrive. You'll have a better sample size of Minshew's work, you'll pay less, and most collectors would probably rather a Prizm silver (if they're as scarce as last season) than a low-tier product 1/1.
