HELP: Real or Fake Magic/Shaq 2000 Bowman’s Best Dual Auto

Hi guys,

I had a member on IG reach out to me saying that he thinks most of these 2000 Magic/Shaq Franchise Favorites Bowman’s Best Dual Auto cards are fake. Apparently, too many have sold on eBay in the last year and he claims BGS has now stopped grading them. The card looks good to my eye and also has a Topps certifying hologram on the back, which would make it a pretty scary fake. I know the Magic auto seems variable on these cards and a little different from his 2019 auto, but this would have been nearly 20 years ago before he signed so much so I don’t know that that is definitive proof. Would appreciate any help/thoughts out there before I consider returning it. Thanks!

Yes, most of them are fake. I haven’t researched how to figure out which are which though. I’m sure someone can provide input on that.

If it is indeed fake, its a scary one and a strange one. Its not even worth that much, yet requires forging 2 signatures, faking a refractor card, and affixing an additional fake Topps hologram to it. Maybe I'll e-mail Topps and see if they can verify the hologram number...

I've seen this card pop up at least a dozen times in the last couple of months on some of the other auction sites I visit. Thought it was strange that as soon as one sold, another popped up. I thought it was because of a deadbeat buyer but this was across 3 different selling platforms...

They cannot. The holograms are useless.

It looks fake. If you go all the way back to before Dec 2015 on Worthpoint, there are three authentic copies of the card. Shaq auto looks much better on those three. Magic as well.

I think the holograms could help, but it would take quite a bit of work. Harper was researching the 2000-01 Final Piece jersey set and he used the holograms to help approximate print run for each player. The trick would be finding what cards are legitimately in the range...provided Topps numbered all copies of this auto sequentially.

So it sounds like the consensus is that the card is real, but the autos are very suspect, i.e., it might be a backdoor copy that went unsigned initially and later had forged signatures added to it (so it was never pack pulled) or at the least the Shaq auto was not actually signed by Shaq (but the card may still have been pack pulled). If anyone has any additional info it would be appreciated. Thanks to all for your help!

No, the card is not real either. It's like all the fake Koufax, Kobe, and Jeter autos that there have been many threads on. Everything is fake (maybe the Topps sticker has been reapplied, not faked). Very rough numbers, but three copies of this card sold from 2008-2015 and then literally hundreds have been pumped out since from fraudulent sellers like lyonhart and tntnorthnj.

Here are 2 with better looking Shaq autos. The hologram numbers are 2 apart. I don't think the holograms are useless here. If I was looking to buy, I would look for something that is also in the 0606XXX range. This is just a theory but it lines up with how some of their other cards were distributed.

Those were early Panini autos. The card in question is believed to be an outright fake and not a case of Shaq’s third cousin signing otherwise authentic cards.

I have one that looks just like yours- purchased a few years ago, though I can't recall where from. Mine looks identical to yours, with the fake-looking Shaq auto. My hologram is 5297777. Hard to know if it is indeed fake, but if so it's remarkably well done (sadly)

Your Magic auto looks better than mine, and my Shaq is same as yours- which is to say, bad. No idea what to make of the holo numbers, but at this point I feel like both ours, and all those others, are fake. The Franchise Favorites area on the fake cards are smooth, meanwhile the real pack pulled one has some rough surfaces on the font of Franchise Favorites.

And yeah, the auto was a giveaway...
