Default Ryu to the Blue Jays

They’re building a pretty good team, methinks. I don't know about 4 years, but I think he can have a couple of more decent ones while the younger guys continue to build momentum. Now, they just need a young, decent arm or two.

Just saw this too.. Ryu might have gotten the best contract of any pitcher this offseason. 4 year deal is insane

For a injury prone 32 year old with one good season no less...

The left-hander made just 41 appearances (40 starts) from 2015-18, as he was hampered by persistent injuries.

As a Nats fan I couldn't wait to get past Buehler to everyone else. Once Clayton came in during that game I told my brother, " We can get to Kershaw"

He completely disintegrated during the last 2 months. One of the worst Augusts in MLB history

He had a terrible August, but he was very good in September. 2.13 ERA and sub 1 WHIP. I don't think Toronto made a smart signing here, but he only disintegrated for 1 month lol

I like it. You look at what Wheeler/Keuchel/Bumgarner got. He's better than them. Now obviously the risk is that he ends up starting 40 games over 4 years. But if you want good starting pitching, you either need to develop them yourself, or give up a lot in terms of money or prospects. The contract also isn't big enough that they can't trade him in a year or two, if he has a little success. He's also a junkballer, so age shouldn't affect him much. The health is the big thing. But worth the risk, IMO.

What I don't get is why the Angels didn't pull the trigger. Where is their starting pitching help coming from? They needed two, and haven't gotten any. Maybe they have a strict '1 Asian pitcher per rotation' policy.

To show you what the starting pitching is like..

MLB.com put a team together of the best remaining free agents. Here's their rotation:

1. Alex Wood
2. Homer Bailey
3. Ivan Nova
4. Rich Hill
5. Jhoulys Chacin

That's awful.

Well I mean,no one is going to have all five.

I like hill, just know that 20 starts is best you are going to get. I like Wood also. He has been a pretty decent recently. Honestly all five of them arent awful as your 4th or 5th starter, frankly probably better then the fifth starters on a lot teams we think could make playoff runs. I guess Chacin is pretty bad.

I was using that to show what the other options are.

Pretty different circumstances. Ryu's career ERA is 2.98. He's just always hurt.

Yes, I dont get this.

Do the Jays think they are close? Just doesn't seem necessary.

Good question. My guess is the ability to flip him down the road played into it. And they have an awful staff.

I’ll go against the grain and say this was a smart signing by the Blue Jays. $20 Million is oddly reasonable in today’s market for a 5 WAR pitcher. This is the world we live in now. Teams look at the WAR and put a value on it. Think about it, Cole and Strasburg each got about $15 Million more per year for one more WAR. Yes, Ryu has been more injury prone, but all pitchers are an injury risk. The Jays got value here without ruining their longterm budget.

Nobody is trading for ryu with 3 years 60 mil left or 2 years 40 mil left when he’s 34 or 35.

Imagine thinking that Ryu (who basically never lasts a full season) is better and has more upside than wheeler. L m a o

You realize what starting pitchers get now?

He's definitely better than Wheeler right now. I'm very skeptical that Wheeler puts it all together. Maybe Philly helps him do that. But the Phillies (or Girardi, or Price) aren't exactly known for their ability to develop pitching.

And Ryu got significantly less than Wheeler, anyway. 4/80. 20 a year. 5/118. 23.6 a year.
