I have been out of the game for 5 years now and my 10 year old nephew is just starting to get into collecting cards. He listed his first 4 cards on Ebay this week and he is hooked. I am thinking of buying a case for him to open but the question is what case should i buy? He has opened 2018 Donruss but that was last year when they were $65 a box, now they are at least double that, so no value there. I was thinking of pre ordering a case of Leaf Limited for $1800, but is that a good buy? My nephew is very knowledgeable of the game and a huge Bills fan!
If you were to buy a case to open with your 10 year old nephew, which would it be and why?

I would get him a case of prizm or optic.
Lots of shiny cool cards .

Go with what the member above recommended Prizm or Optic. It will provide him with a nice mix of cards to sell or trade to fuel his new habit!

Baseball-Allen & Ginter, there is a lot more to talk about
Football-Fanatics currently has 2018 Contenders blasters at $14 per box, then do a college Contenders case. It introduces him to the NFL and College cards Basketball: Prizm or Optic retail when you can find it

Something earlier on with a good chance to pull a Singletary/Oliver. Maybe Phoenix or something.

If you were to find something that is Rookie Premiere focused like Origins it would increase the chances of pulling a Devin Singletary in the cards. Less of the filler 6th round defensive rookies like Optic offers.
Less cards though. So if you are looking for stuff with a base/insert set to collect Optic is hard to beat for that. But if you are hoping to get nice hits to flip for PC cards with a shot at a nice PC hit, I'd suggest something like Origins

If he liked 2018 Donruss, why not go with 2019 Donruss? I think it is one of the most fun breaks every year.

Lucky nephew!
When I was his age....you got packs or boxes for presents, not a whole case! |

I would go with Optic
On card autos. Plenty of rookies and inserts. Plenty of color. Always a fun rip. |

I really like Illusions as a fun hobby break. Autos, mem cards, and an encased. Plus thick stock cards, acetate cards, and lots of numbered. About $150.

If the goal is a good checklist, cool parallels, and a chance for hits...Optic or Prizm is the way to go. Phoenix is also underrated IMO.

Best to get 8-10 different products and let him decide which he likes the best, and then go from there. Much more fun - and waaay less duplicates! |

Like mentioned above, variety would be nice. Maybe 2 Prizm, 2 Optic and 2 Contenders. Those are 3 of the 4 products that actually hold their value every year. The last one being National Treasures, but it hasn’t been released yet, and likely out of the price range for a 10 year old! There’s also Donruss and Contenders Optic which hold their value, but Contenders Optic isn’t out yet (I prefer regular Contenders anyway), and Optic is just the “Topps Chrome” version of Donruss. Optic just being overall nicer in just about every way. This is looking at it more on the “investor” side (don’t like to use that word in card collecting, but it is what it is). At the end of the day the products I mentioned have the chance of pulling $1000+ cards, while the less popular releases don’t have that kind of upside (unless you get super lucky!). It is fun to open any product, but you’re probably less likely to be throwing your money away if you stick to the more desirable products. If your nephew is into veteran hits, these products have them, but it’s like 90%+ 2019 draft class rookies. That could also sway what you choose. Good luck
These products also have a ton of packs which are always fun to open. Just totaled it up and it would be $1165.90 on Blowout, so it’s considerably less than a case.

Busting a case with a 10 year old? You'll spoil him for life. I remember when getting a box was the holy grail (never happened to me until I was like 17). Get him some packs at the dollar store and call it good

Don't you think you're going a little overboard? I would not have gotten that much from my own parents and aunts and uncles combined for 3 Christmas', High School Graduation, College Graduation and my 16th Birthday combined.

No one is going to comment that his 10 year old nephew is selling cards on eBay?

Could be worse. Some members on here are full grown men living in their mommas basement. Actin like they 10 when they run out of chocolate milk.
