I'm sure a handful of you have followed my mail day postings and random Topps Chrome conquests over the years, but with a more than likely divorce looming in my near future and a subsequent opportunity to teach in Dubai in less than 2 years, I thought it might be time to at least entertain the idea of selling off the collection. I know that finding a bulk buyer might be next to impossible, and with the time frame, I might be able to handle things on my end by piecing it out slowly over the next year or so, but was wondering how to approach that massive undertaking.
My initial idea was to break up everything into small sets (for example, selling off a complete 2015 patch auto set, or a 2013 "1969" refractor set missing just a handful of cards), so that way I wouldn't be stuck with a ton of no-name autos at the end of everything. I would definitely keep my full auto sets together, but would then piece out what I have for parallel autos as lots as well (with potentially selling off some of the bigger name parallel autos individually). As for my complete base sets and boxes full of random Chrome stuff, not really sure, but just wondering if this might be a good plan or if anyone else has some good ideas. I really want to create a concrete and feasible selling plan before venturing down this path, so any input would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

It sounds like your idea is the best you are gonna find. If you piece them out beyond that, you will end up with all the no names that aren't worth anything

maybe a combination of selling off sets and submitting the rest to COMC might be the ticket. Minimal effort on the random stuff using comc, use the credit to buy a few bigger cards on there, have them shipped to you and sell those privately or on ebay or keep so as
not to lose too much value on cashing out. idk I'm just spit balling here... |

My guess is that it would be worth it for any cards that are worth more than $1. And the reason for the suggestion on buying other comc cards with the balance is that comc hits you pretty hard if you cash out for straight money. I think it's around 20% if memory serves. But if you buy cards there's no additional fees and you just pay shipping. Last edited by mortatort; 01-17-2020 at 01:34 PM. |

Wow, that sounds awful/awesome/tragic/exciting all rolled into one.......I can hardly imagine how you’re feeling.
I don’t know if these cards would make it into possible sets and so maybe you’d consider selling individually: 2010 - Colt McCoy superfractor 2010 - Colt McCoy gold /50 2010 - Jordan Shipley red /25 2010 - Dez Bryant red /25 2005 - “Golden Anniversary” Edgerrin James /100 2005 - “Golden Anniversary” Lee Evans /100 Best of luck through both the good and the bad. Here’s to hoping there’s much more of the former than the latter in your future. |

Sell all your stuff as fast as you can if there is a divorce looming. Use the cash to buy something that will hold value... maybe precious metals. Bury that stuff until the dust settles. I've said my piece.

Ha! I don't think it is that type of a situation, no lawyers would be involved for any reason, but will still hold on to that idea, ha!

It is going to be a brutal process if you have that much stuff. You might be best offer determine what your absolute bottom dollar for everything would be, and reaching out to one of the big guys who buy collections and see if they'll take everything. You have to weight the cost of your time/energy, etc. If you have the time and don't mind then no big deal, but let's say the collection is worth 20k and it's going to take you 500 hours to piece everything out to get the full 20k; would you sell it outright, right now for 12k and be done with it? Those are the things you have to consider.

All depends on what the collection is. There are plenty of people that buy large collections for 60% of actual value, knowing it is worth the work to gain the 40% return. Happens every day. Now I your collection is hot garbage and not actually worth it, that's a different story.

About 4 or 5 years ago I decided to sell out my collection and I started by piecing it out. After a while it got old and too time consuming. I put on a spread sheet of what I had left (and that took a lot of time as well), went to the National and talked to some of the bigger buyers and gave them my list and to contact me if interested. Last person I talked to was Buffi here at Blowout. He took my list and analyzed it and he and I negotiated what I thought was a very fair price for both parties. He was very fair and he did not try to low ball me like some of the others did. A very pleasant and easy transaction. I would contact him if I were you. Just giving you my experience. Good luck.

It will be sometime before I even consider pricing out everything (and quite the process that will be), but if I do eventually go that route, I will keep you in mind. I'm more than likely not going to be breaking up sets or anything like that though to just pull out the better cards, but for cards that are not necessarily part of a set, that could be an option.

Another way would be by team. I know I can’t be the only person that collects their favorite team regardless of value and hype.
I’d be curious what you had left (after all the sets) of Bengals and the Price you had in mind.

A recent thread had some good discussion about set building and the challenges of selling. Quite a few people had luck selling a few key cards rather than focusing on selling partial or full sets.
https://www.blowoutforums.com/showth...ight=Sell+sets Although it would be tough to bring myself to break up sets, it would probably be the quickest and most equitable way. Once the $20+ cards are on the market, the rest could be shipped to COMC for sale over time.
