Default BGS with subgrades vs without

Was helping my kids grandfather get some cards ready to send to BGS the other day and he was pretty adamant about going with the cheaper option of grading without subgrades, and I couldn't sway him from it.

What is everyone's experience when selling without the subgrades? I told him the extra $10 per card would be worth the cost in the long run when he wants to sell them, but he didn't agree and went with the cheaper option.

I personally won't buy a card without subgrades if it's a plentifully available one. If it's uber rare I'd buy and send it in myself to get the subgrades. My .02.

Agree, or just do PSA at that point, really the best thing about BGS is the sub grade set up.

BGS without subgrades is like going to a steakhouse and ordering a chicken salad.

You could do it, but why?

For higher end cards subgrades make sense. For mid to lower end I have np without the subs.

If the cards are modern, it will be very very hard to move without subs (at least a 20% difference/less in sale price with cards w/subs...and that is if you can get a buyer for the no sub card). If vintage, then it's not nearly as bad....but if you can wait on not having the cards for 80-90 business says, you are better off going with PSA (they're not accepting orders currently though while BGS is still currently accepting mail in submissions as you've probably figured out).

They are definitely modern cards, Brady, LeBron and Brees RC's, 6 cards total I think. He was more interested in saving a few bucks now because of his financial situation.

If the 6 cards have a strong chance of gem mint (4 sharp corners, 55-45 or better centering and clean edges/surfaces), tell him he will make his money back and more by doing subgrades....a card with four 9.5 subs will pick up some value lost by going BGS instead PSA. If however there is chance the cards won't get four BGS 9.5 subs, then that's when you go with the no sub route.

Many collectors prefer BGS.

He has already sent them in without subgrades. I think all but the Brady are strong 9s or 10s. The Brady will probably be an 8 because it's a notoriously tough grade, the UD with blue borders.

Cost effective and you encapsulate the card.

100% fine without subs, If its a 10 it gets subs anyway. If your doing 300+ lower end cards makes perfect sense and 7 dollars per card is a lot. Sold many mid tier cards without subs with zero issues in price. The only foolish glaring difference you will see in prices is psa 10 vs BGS 9.5 makes no sense.

I buy cards lacking subgrades all the time, because I dislike the graded card premium, and prefer a great card at a cheaper price but the implication as a seller is you will see a discount

Examples of mine w/no subs

People just like the subs so they specifically know what needs to be fixed when they resubmit it. Am I gonna need the Exacto knife today or is all it needs is a good wipedown with the trusty eyeglasses cloth?

I've never cared for subgrades so I wouldn't pay more for them, the overall grade is what should matter. I understand that I'm in the minority on this though.

On better cards and ones I like and want a quality high grade on (or think they could contend for BGS Black) I go subs.

For lesser stuff that I still like or that might be borderline (or slightly lesser) than I would want, I'm open to no subs.

Biggest factor? Cost. How/where I do mine, it's 33 percent cheaper to go no-subs vs. subs. And that price is the same as PSA ... with far longer wait time for PSA.

I prefer the thicker BGS slabs, too, but cost/time is still No. 1 variable for me as a collector.
