Default My yearly Beckett rant

It’s been a year since I bought my last Beckett Hockey Price Guide. I’ve always been critical of them that their pricing is either incorrect and that they never update the prices of older cards. But I decided to pick up the new May edition as I am bored and wanted to read the Draisaitl article. I remained optimistic that Beckett would finally get its act together but I was wrong again.

Actually, it’s even worse than I thought. I have a Beckett price guide from a year ago and barely any of the prices have changed save for the new sets they have listed. For example, Draisaitl YG price hasn’t changed in one year according to Beckett and is still listed at $60 (the high price). What a joke! Who’s selling a Draisaitl YG for that price? His YG consistently sells for $130-150 on eBay. The likely MVP with 2 back to back 100-point seasons and his price hasn’t increased at all? Sadly, it’s the same for most cards 2018 or earlier. What’s the point of releasing a mingle guide if you don’t update the prices? Why would I pay for a subscription when I can just go on eBay and check current and accurate pricing information?

Oh and the Draisaitl article is crap and just basically lists his stats. Wow such in-depth writing Beckett! Perhaps the people who religiously buy this magazine can’t think critically so that’s all they can handle. Oh and their ‘hot list’ is just the 25 new YG cards on the market.

Basically, the people at Beckett are just fat, lazy slobs who don’t want to take the time to update their prices or actually give us some in-depth articles and accurate trends on the market. Maybe they don’t possess the intellectual capacity to do so or are just lazy and their regular customers apparently don’t either.

It’s sad that it’s the only price guide out there in the hobby. Guess I’ll continue to use eBay and keep my money in my pocket. Ok My rant is over for another year.

I didnt even know they had a magazine anymore. Not like their prices matter. Literally everyone goes off of eBay sales.

No collector pages either despite they say one page is supposed to be devoted to them.

Yes this is true although there are die hard dealers and collectors out there who still worship the Beckett price guides!

Only those dealers and collectors who are too lazy use to eBay or want to use the high prices listed in Beckett because they haven’t updated the pricing in order to make a profit.

People use eBay prices because they’re much easier to manipulate.

I don't. Since there are very few sportscard stores anymore, I can only speak about the largest "collectibles" store in Southern Ontario. They order 5 copies per release.

No way. Nobody actually uses beckett for it's listed values do they? Why would they? It's not accurate and the published values are a month behind at best. I'd buy it for the articles, but as a price guide, it's mostly useless.

I like reading it for the card content, but the prices are whack.
