Default If you had 5k to invest on a basketball card

I’m wanting to buy a big purchase for myself. I don’t see myself ever spending this much on a single purchase card ever again. If you had 5k to purchase one card what would it be?

Why 1 5K card, why not 5 1K cards? What are you going for? Sounds like an investment. In the middle of a NBA shutdown (and ironically a spike in nba card prices) not sure this a good time to throw 5k at a card just because you can. I'm sure there are the MJ and lebron investors that will point you one way or another. But it sounds like you have a craving and at 5k Id say think about what you want a bit more.

Very broad question. Depends if you are playing it risky or safe.

Honestly, 5k today isn't what it was 4 months ago.. Are you trying to flip, invest, or collect?

I’d probably diversify it...get a Jordan and a Lebron 1K card. Get a Luka and/or Zion. Pick your favorite player and throw something on him. Spend a portion on a riskier play.
That’s just my opinion.

High grade Topps chrome refractors. Lebron and Kobe stuff has taken off, other stars will follow suit - Durant, Wade, Iverson, etc

Also early non rc Tom Brady gold refractors are crazy inexpensive

Well if you're investing long term..

Safest is an MJ Fleer Rc or LeBron Chrome Rc

A bit boring though.

So I promised myself if I ever sold anything I collected growing up like my comics or toys the money I make from them would be used to buy something I like to collect. I’m a long time basketball fan but really just a newbie to collecting basketball cards. I’m more of the type of person who rather buy 1 item as opposed to more cards. I’m a fan of so many players so I’m not sure which direction to go. My money doesn’t go far enough to get a lebron RC I really want. I’m thinking maybe a Luka Flawless RC graded? Just trying to educate myself of what Luka cards I should by was not easy and not sure if I seeing things right.

I would save your money and study this market first. No reason to make a decision right now. Look over past sold items and focus on players and cards that appeal to your taste. At the end of the day, the cards you buy will be yours. Don't let a forum or others sway your decision. Good luck with your decision and I wish you the best

We're living in clown world right now. Spread that 5k out a little bit.

Definitely pick up a 2008 Topps Chrome Kobe though

Yes. We should pool our resources and buy the high membership to see what the hell they're talking about and share all the info for free.

Thank you... it’s crazy I feel like I have been studying at least the Luka market for 5 months and still don’t have a solid grasp of what is really valued one from another. The previous sales on eBay don’t always give the exact answers. A card that was won in auction for 3k I find the buyer won’t take a best offer of 5k? Maybe it’s because Luka could go off in the playoffs and have his cards explode in prices? I’d like to get a prizm but these cards are skyrocketing by the day. Thanks I’ll keep researching

I'd advise against Luka, if you are trying to consolidate a long-time collection to one card, and only plan on doing it one time. He is still too big of a risk for a one-time ooprtunity. Luka, Zion, Ja, Trae right now are for speculators, not for someone looking for a collection centerpiece.

Go for someone in the top 10 NBA players all time. Get a great rookie card or a rare auto in the 5K range after researching them.

That doesn't mean the guy thinks luka may go off in the playoffs. It means he's a flipper. He bought a card at a price that he knows he can profit from. I would stay away from that guy or card. You will end up overpaying for that card you could of won cheaper, with better timing. Just keep studying and watching. When the card you want, shows up at the price you want, you will know and make the move. Hope that helps. Bol

You can probably get every LeBron TC Refractor other than his RC for less thank $5k total. Considering how much Jordan TC Refractors are going for, there is definitely a high ceiling there.

If you're investing, expecting a return of profit and some sort of minimized risk, I'd eliminate any current players that's not named LeBron James, he's the GOAT of this era.

Forget about Zion, Giannis, Durant, Leonard, Curry, etc. - - they're good, possibly great, some are shoe-in's for the Naismith Hall of Fame (but that's where Moses Malone, Walt Bellamy, Willis Reed, Gary Payton and a whole lot of awesome players who don't translate into cardboard gold reside)

I'd say your best money is on Kareem, Wilt, Jordan, Kobe or LeBron. Go for the big names.

I'd say getting vintage RC's of Kareem, Wilt or Jordan, not Kobe nor LeBron because they're in the era where cards were created for collectors and produced for a thriving hobby.

I'd say if you love Kobe or LeBron, go for high grade, on-card autographed cards.

The great thing about autographed cards is the players will eventually reach a deceased status, elevating public attention and boosting values upon their death instantly. They also have longevity to sustain value, since obviously they player won't be signing anymore.

I love the Wilt RC and the Jordan Star RC as my top 2 picks for you 'tho.

If you're actually willing to put in the work / research, find something that HAS NOT moved in the past few months. Anything that has shown an increase since beginning of the year obviously has downside (the base PSA 10s and silvers). Go for stuff that hasn't shown much movement one way or the other because it's only sought after by true collectors, and probably has a decent floor. As others have said, pick a player / set that you like and go from there. Luka Immac RPAs actually have gone down while his Prizms & Optics have gone up, might be a good time to grab one of those. Just know that the high end stuff is much less "liquid" so if you're planning on selling down the line it will take a lot of patience to get the price you want
