Default Nostalgia: Kevin Maas

I saw this on eBay and had to buy it. After a massive bidding war, I was the lucky winner at $5.50.

When I was 14 years old, this was the hottest card in the universe, as Maas was crushing homers and appeared to be the next legendary Yankee. He set the record for the fewest at bats (72) to hit his first 10 homers.

It was short lived, as I believe he couldn't hit a curveball.

I know any collectors over 40 remember him and this card well.

Love it. If I'm not mistaken, Sam Horn was as hot as Maas at the time. Big Red Sox boomer like Maas. Todd Benzinger was also another one in that time who's stuff was hot.

Solid nostalgia. I remember that card for sure. Ryan Klesko too

I think Klesko and Jeffries ended up with HOF careers compared to Maas.

Let's not forget that 92 Fleer Rookies Sensations Phil Plantier card. I way over paid for a few of those back in '92. After his '91 season with an OPS of 1.034 he seemed destined for stardom.

Hehe, yes I got it in the mail yesterday and was jumping up and down.

However, I've never understood why people want to throw their money away. That's a recent grade, and it cost someone at least 3 times what I paid to grade it. Why the hell would you send that card in?

Oh well. I'll happily add it to my collection.

Even in a bulk submission... the actual value isn't worth grading fees/shipping etc.

Someone will buy it... 1990 Upper Deck BGS 9.5 Complete set!! Documentaries are made about things like this.

I bought his Leaf rookie in PSA 10 a few years ago. I still remember rifling through my LCS's "common" monster box of 1990 Fleer picking out all of his 2-player rookie cards. The owner caught on and was like "Really?"

He basically gave me a few copies if I went though all his boxes and dug everything he had out for him. I thought it was the score of a lifetime. I may have negotiated a can of orange soda to be thrown in to complete the deal.

And yet landing a 9.5 out of that release ain't easy ... 2,500 out of nearly 16,000 for entire set. (Only 75 10s of both types.)

Remember when everyone was talking about Ruben Sierra being the next Ronald Acuna Jr. I think that’s how I remember it!

This is exactly why I try and not buy into the hype. How many of the guys whose PSS 10 RCs from 2017-2020 that go for hundreds will be like this Mass in 20 years. I would say most of them.

For every Trout there will be 100 Kevin Maas’.

Man, this hits home so well as I think '90 is the first year I really got into cards as a kid. Absolutely loved UD. Maas was definitely on fire for a time back in the day. I really loved the look of '90 Score but could never find it around me. Had all the UD, Topps, Donruss, and Fleer I wanted. Thought '90 Score was very limited at the time...

But Maas was never a top prospect - he was a AAAA guy who got an opportunity to play in the big leagues; all the hype might have been nuts but he was 25 in his ‘magical’ rookie season.

I remember Todd Zeile’s cards going for a decent bit for a while around that time.

Very true. Just like Judge and Alonso. Judge was 25 his rookie year, Alonso was 24. Both those players had no hype as prospects and big hype after call up based on performance. Judge was a four year minor league player who got the call based on injuries and lit it up for a year. He would probably be a good comparison to Maas, and his prices have already plummeted from where they were as well.

Maybe Alonso will be next, especially with not being able to play this year so far.
