So, it looks like between Paul Hornung (200) and Davante Adams (76) which accounts for 276 autos in the product, none of these were inserted into the boxes/cases.
Andre Rison with 200 autos there is a ton out there and even Crosby with only 41 I have seen a bunch. To start, I know Panini can essentially get away with what ever they want and no one will stop buying. Second, the people that bought Packers and these players based on the checklist got #@#@#@#@ed pretty good. Have you noticed any other autos that haven’t shown up? Do you think they knew and never changed checklist realized afterwards and didn’t let the people know? Do you think they were ever made? If they were they can’t put them out now without looking bad. I remember the 2014 NT Teddy Bridgewater backdooring but haven’t followed scandals closely since. Has there been a lot?

It's more eye-catching with "scandal" in the title. My interest was definitely piqued.

Exactly, thank you. And would agree it is a scandal if true?

Thank you, it looks like they are. More people should be outraged but like I stated few will care.

Oh, this was Topps but I forgot about that. Thanks for the reminder. Topps can also do what they want and it won’t matter.

Not the 1st time it's happend and won't be the last. Many times companies don't receive the cards back from the signers in time for product release and in some cases they don't receive the cards back at all. If they do get then in hand they will either end up on the rewards site or inserted into future products much like 2019 National Treasures and Flawless have some 2018 cards in them....what a spicy scandal

5 months later, people are outraged they can’t get a $9 autograph card of a HOFer who has signed way more than necessary.
I’m glad Hornung didn’t make the set. His auto has deteriorated so much it’s actually unsettling to look at now. Maybe I’m jaded, but checklists get changed at the last minute all the time. It’s nothing on the level of showcasing the first ever Joe Paterno licensed autograph card on all presale sheets and delivering one of the worst product lines ever that didn’t even include a paterno auto. Topps did that. The issue isn’t the player not being in the set, the issue is breakers selling the spots.

Promotional information like checklists are created well in advance. The company tries to get that information into the hands of the many sites demanding it. I assume PR isn’t 100% in tune with the manufacturing side, and a last minute decision to not pack out an item could happen after the checklist went out on a press release. Often times, manufacturers don’t print every item in their building and sometimes don’t even package their own product. I’m not sure 100% on every panini product on the process, but there’s a million logical reasons why a player is left on a checklist even though a card isn’t released. Typically, when it comes to autographs, its player failing to satisfy his contract or a quality control error.
In 1997, Fleer Skybox made the Autographics set, and planned on every card has a base version, and a version /100.... except for their spokesperson Brett Favre. He was to only have the /100 version. What happened? Reggie White signed his base cards in a silver pen and they were all destroyed except a handful. Officially, there’s only the century marks. But both do exist. My guess is the hornungs looked horrible so QC pulled them.

I agree with you that it is shady and screws those who get into group breaking which is where most of the business has gone. If this were a Brady and your paying top $ for Pats in a break or buying a case/box of that particular line of product chasing Brady Autos and you found out none where ever put into production until months after the fact, I think most would be pretty upset too. The pricing for PYT breaks generally goes based on # and quality of hits for said teams, so yes I see your point on people getting the short in of the stick there. Sadly though I think that is what most of us expect though from Panini at this point anyway. Same can be argued with points, redemptions that are never filled, etc.

Take a look at the checklist for 2019 Elements on the Panini site. Right at the top are three sections of cards that should’ve been in the 2018 product (and are still on the 2018 Elements checklist on their site).
eg the 2018 Ricky Williams gold metal signature /25. It’s listed on both checklists. This isn’t two or three cards held for replacements, it’s the full run of that parallel. So Panini knew the cards weren’t packed in the product (or inserted as redemptions), but they didn’t update the checklist either. The former happens occasionally, but the latter is totally lazy and unfair. |
