Default Let's talk 90's basketball inserts...

I know that the ones that are 1:360 or 1:180 are doing very well. How about those 1:36 or 1:25 or the like? Do you think there is a rising market for these?

As we get further and further from those times, it will be harder and harder to find these cards as they are placed in PC's to never see the light again (until their grand kids get a hold of them!).

Thoughts on mid-level 90's inserts and their investment potential?

I’m not all about that investiculture... though I’m quite familiar with these 90’s inserts. They were the original “hit” of the box. People busted 1994-95 Hoops for that Big Numbers or 1994-95 UD for that one Special Edition Gold. Cards like Ultra Scoring Kings are nice “hits” and look great but they aren’t especially rare. I think the sets that don’t get enough attention for their scarcity are those inserts like Special Edition Gold and Gold Signature from Collector’s Choice that dropped one per box and the sets had 200 cards in them. I think cool parallels like Spectralight from 1994-95 Topps also have a great look and don’t break the bank.

There's a certain mid 90's insert set that is so undervalued (my opinion, of course) that I am afraid to name it and next thing you know I'm paying 4x to complete the set.. So I think I'll revisit this thread later to say what it is. I'm excited to put it together though

They aren't but, rare as in...available for sale now on ebay (compared to current inserts)...they are pretty rare. So, I think people are looking to add to their player collections and/or connect with their childhood. So, I'm seeing something there, but thinking about how the market will be for these cards in like 2-3 years...what's the future?

Ones that shock me are the 98-99 premium 3-ds, they're cool i guess? I've only pulled 2 ever, oddly Jordan and kobe. But 1:96 packs I believe and sell like they're case hits.

One that has risen that's 1:24 packs I believe aka 1 per box are the 99-00 e-x e-xciting. Feature a jersey cut shape with refractory finish. They aren't crazy expensive but i put this set together when a kobe would cost you $10 or so. All seemed to have rise 5x or so what they used to sell for. Kobe and jwill seem to sell for the most. Still very affordable but have definitley jumped despite not really being rare. A Jordan in red uni would have looked awesome if they could have made one.

Proportionally, design wins out over scarcity. There are 1:24 MJ inserts that are $500+ even in mint condition because they look amazing.

Neither Planet Metal sets are very rare. 97-98 was one per box and I believe it was the same with 98-99 (which is the one I’m assuming you’re thinking of).

I think ones that encompass the best of both old and new, and have a unique design are the best bets. I can see the Topps Generations set continuing to grow. 1:36 packs, die cut. Jordan, Pippen, Rodman, Kobe, Shaq, Penny, Garnett, Duncan and McGrady. Missing a few names like Iverson and includes Laettner and Shareef.

Finding one that has VC, Dirk, Pierce included with the superstars of the day as well? More Difficult.

The design of the card helps the value for sure. Some cards may be rare, but are butt-ugly! So, no love there!

Each time I see these cards, it reminds me of the chill-days back at the ranch!

most people to some degree to romanticize the past, but in massive amount of set instances, the designs were groundbreaking and the players are icons now. combine that with the fact that many people that used to collect in past eras are now older, have more $, and also possibly still have remnants of an old collection etc and hold very little player specific interest in the current game, but still love to watch the sport, the first port of call is the preferred classic players.

there was more variation of sets n design back then too, literally now everything is 1 image and 30 card tech versions of it. card design and impact cool factor has taken a massive backseat in the age of flip n prospect. its commoditized things to such a degree that many people, like myself, have very little interest in supporting it and couldnt care less about profiting from that process.

95-96 flair hot numbers have really nice designs. not sure if they'll keep climbing. jordan's can be had for $200 a few years ago but since the last dance they have sky rocketed.

The 1996 bowmans best...had some great inserts...best picks...best shots..ect.. all had refractor and atomic refractor versions...and different odds...best picks atomic refractor were 1 in 192 packs and a 10 card set...so the odds of getting the player you want were really 1920 packs..lol

I've been observing sale prices of star players and their 90's inserts. The interest is definitely there for the nicer, shinier, flashier ones! The 1:8 ones are not doing so well, but 1:24 and up are definitely trending up.

Glad this market is doing well...the 90's inserts were the best. Not the garbage/lazy colors we get now from Panini!

I’d like to see Panini come up with more chase inserts rather than everything being a retread of chrome parallels. The people are ready for the next Jambalaya.

90’s insert popularity is a combo of nostalgia, quality designs, and a lack of Panini’s creativity. It’s refreshing seeing some of these more popular designs maintaining interest over the years as many of us had our roots in the 90’s and are coming back around to chase these cards again.

I think the Dunk N Go Nuts cards have the craziest odds to price ratio. 1:36 packs and the Jordan can sell upwards of $3k.

Just proves design trumps rarity.

That’s the example I was going to mention.

They’ve grown on me slightly but people must REALLY love that Dunkin Donuts color scheme.

One of the more clever insert set names and designs though. You don't see anything like that from Panini. Fleer made some creative stuff.

I always wondered what the price would be if Jordan had been included in the 1998-99 Skybox That’s Jam set. I always thought it was a....unique set.

This is the card on top of my list I wish were made. With what the Kobe is going for, I think now it would be a $800 card.

I've buying more and more of these of certain guys that I think will do well in the next few months. I could tell that the sellers have had these cards since day 1...the card is "stuck" in the penny sleeve! So, I found a bunch of gradeable ones that I plan to send in with my next bulk sub!

Love 'them 90's inserts!
