Default What to do when your PC player gets traded?

Dear Abby:

For the first time ever, I started collecting an individual player, Joey Cantillo. I had a bit of luck on pulling him in a couple of Padres breaks, and somebody asked if I collect him, and all of the sudden I was.

I decided to try for my first rainbow, then started grabbing every variation... auto, non-auto, megabox, Sapphire... I was a madman. Checking eBay three times a day, overpaying for green autos, you name it.

Then, this morning, I read the trade news, and he's off to Cleveland. Damn Padres.

So, what do I do now?

Should I keep going? He does have some potential, and a nice signature.

Give up now? What would I do with the hours a week I save?

Find that one Indians collector who wants to jump in now?

Has anybody been in a similar situation? What did you do?

Sincerely yours,

Padre Maniac

I only PC Yankees I like, so if they leave, I stop PCing any new card of the player on a different team and only pick up his cards from the Yankees that I still need. I also will then go fined another Yankee player to obsess about; I mean PC.

In 1992, I was devastated when mom told me Canseco was going to the Rangers. It was a hard thing emotionally for me! Looking back, while I wish he would have stayed with the A's, it is really fun collecting cards of his depicting 9 different teams.

Today's baseball climate isn't conducive to collectors who want to stick with a player for one team for life because trades happen frequently. Unless you can't stand the sight of him in different threads, I'd say keep going!

I am just hoping the man can have a good life; heart issues are no joke. If he plays baseball again, great.

I've been fortunate on some box and case breaks to get more than my share of Chavis. If he gets traded some day, I will probably sell. All time greats, I hold onto.

I mainly collect the guys from the World Series winning teams and the guys I grew up with - Yaz of course, Rice, Boggs, and from the modern teams I have accumulated some nice Pedey stuff.

There’s that Tatis fella I keep hearing about. You could collect him.

In all seriousness stick it out with the player. That has always been my mind set. In the world of free agency and trade deadlines, no one will stay on a team forever. Except maybe Trout

I remember the first time this happened to me, Andrelton Simmons, I bought up his 2010 refractors, his bowman autos, got my wife a Simmons jersey for when we go see the Braves... then he was traded for a wagon full of crap... still have all his cards since there's a decent chance he makes a run at the HoF due to his defense, but what upsets me most is he's on the west coast so I rarely get to see his defensive wizardry (no offense to the original Wizard of Oz). Also, the real dick punch was I went all-in with most of my purchases after he signed the 7 year extension thinking he'd was in ATL till 2021, i thought great, I don't have to worry about him being traded, 1 year later...

I went through this when Denard Span was first traded by the Twins. Was on the fence, but decided since he wasn't a highly priced player that I would keep going with the PC. After getting traded to the Nationals and still collecting him, I had no issues continue to collect him once he eventually went to the Giants, Rays and Mariners.

My PC player getting traded was the best thing that ever happened to him despite there begin zero positive feelings about it from basically anyone in the world at the time.

If he's your guy, let it ride.

Jose Cruz Jr is my PC guy and that started when the Jays traded for him back in 1997. When he left Toronto for Tampa as a free agent, I stuck with it. He's long since retired, but I look at the cards once in a while and it brings back some solid memories.

What to do when your PC player gets traded?

never understand this type of question. if he is your pc guy, you keep collecting him. if you just collected him because he was on the padres, then he is not truly your "pc guy." he is just a guy you collect.

You're absolutely right... as a (long suffering) Padres fan, I am super pleased with the moves; it is only as a Cantillo collector that I am bummed.

I have more Tatis cards than I want to reveal, but the allure of Cantillo was getting in at the beginning, before there were too many cards to try and back-fill. The flip side of this is that I don't have a real connection to the player yet... it isn't like he was from my hometown, or I watched him play in high school or something. I pulled a couple in a Bowman break, and sort of got myself hooked. Now that I have started, though, I feel like I need to continue.

That's a really interesting point, and I'll meditate on this further.

Thanks for all the thoughtful answers, and go Padres.
